  Meet the women who wrote.   
  They wrote against all odds. Some wrote defiantly; some wrote desperately. Some wrote while trapped within the confines of status and wealth. Some wrote hand-to-mouth in abject poverty. Some wrote trapped in a room of their father’s house, and some went in search of a room of their own. They had lovers and families. They were sometimes lonely. Many wrote anonymously or under a pseudonym for a world not yet ready for their genius and talent.   
  We know many of their names—Austen and Alcott, Brontë and Browning, Wheatley and Woolf—though some may be less familiar.  They are here, waiting to introduce themselves.  
  They marched through the world one by one or in small sisterhoods, speaking to each other and to us over distances of place and time. Pushing back against the boundaries meant to keep us in our place, they carved enough space for themselves to write. They made space for us to follow. Here they are gathered together, an army of women who wrote and an arsenal of words to inspire us. They walk with us as we forge our own paths forward.

  Aboard the Norwegian whaling ship Thorgrim, the Captain announces to the Mate, Sigurd, that he will allow him to take the second shot at the next whale they hunt and if there is a third whale, he will be permitted to take the first shot. Sigurd, ambitious for promotion to gunner on the whaling ship, is delighted and can scarcely contain his impatience and excitement.   "The Last Man" is a novel written by Mary Shelley, the author best known for "Frankenstein." Published in 1826, "The Last Man" is a work of science fiction and is considered one of the earliest examples of post-apocalyptic literature. The novel is set in the late 21st century and narrated by a character named Lionel Verney. It tells the story of a devastating global pandemic that wipes out most of the world's population. Lionel, seemingly the last surviving human, recounts the events leading up to the downfall of civilization and his experiences as the titular last man.

  Mary Eliza Isabella Frere (1845–1911) was an English author of works regarding India. She is most famous for her beautiful retellings of Indian fairy tales.  
  "Punchkin" is a traditional fairy tale about a Rajah with seven daughters. When he remarries, the princesses' stepmother is determined to do away with the girls and make her own daughter the heir to the throne. A series of adventures and trials follows which leads to the overthrow of an evil magician.

  First published in the Civil and Military Gazette on June 10th 1887, and collected in Plain Tales from the Hills in 1888, and in successive later editions of this collection. It is the last of the thirty-nine stories published in the paper between November 1886 and June 1887.Dumoise, a Civil Surgeon in a small station, marries and lives in happy delight for a year. Then his wife dies of typhoid, the idyll is destroyed, and Dumoise is a broken man. He goes on a walking tour up in the hills, and one evening his bearer rushes to him in terror, saying that he had 'seen the Memsahib'. She has left a message for Dumoise that she will 'meet him at Nuddea', a place he had never heard of. On his return he is posted to Nuddea, twelve hundred miles away in Bengal, to help with a cholera epidemic. Within eleven days he had joined his wife.
