The final issue of the year comes when the nights in the Northern Hemisphere are at their longest and coldest. It’s at this time that fiction is needed the most. Against the backdrop of darkness, we gather close and whisper tales to entertain and inspire—and to remind ourselves that dawn will return.
Welcome to issue #135. In these pages are the continuation of Flashlight, Knife and Flowered Crown. Hands of a Toolmaker presents another tale of rage, but this time it is contained and honed into a weapon. In the story The Feline, The Witch and The Universe a witch travels the cosmos in search of her lost cat and finds something she didn't know was missing. To balance the issue we have Slough, a story of the past coming back to haunt. In Kirti, karma serves a sour dish to one man. The stories are knit together with a variety of verse from some of the finest speculative poets publishing today.
Whether you read in print, digital or listen to the audio production, this issue will warm and entertain until spring.

His body, like yours, would liemute as a plumuntil a vigilant limb cameto a decision. As you might have guessedI've come to one myself.

Moving from the absurdity of the First World War to the chaos of today’s cities, where men share beds, bottles of ouzo and shade from willow trees, these poems ask questions: If your lover speaks in his sleep, how do you know 'you' is you? What good is it to decorate a headstone? What if you think of the perfect comeback to a six-year-old argument? Otter fails, with style, to find answers.

'Ladouceur writes with an awareness of queer history, documenting it faithfully, but with his own twist … This is poetry motivated by an honest wit.'-- John Barton, Arc Poetry Magazine

Early dramatic works—plus two essays—by the author of Lolita and Pale Fire.   Including The Man from the USSR, The Event, The Pole, and The Grand-dad, this volume collects works for the theater written during Vladimir Nabokov’s émigré years, before his writings in English earned him worldwide fame and made him a seven-time National Book Award finalist. Also included are two of his essays on drama: “Playwriting” and “The Tragedy of Tragedy.”   Translated and with introductions by Dmitri Nabokov, this collection offers a fascinating glimpse into the work of the novelist, one of the twentieth century’s acknowledged literary geniuses.

Measure for Measure is among the most passionately discussed of Shakespeare’s plays. In it, a duke temporarily removes himself from governing his city-state, deputizing a member of his administration, Angelo, to enforce the laws more rigorously. Angelo chooses as his first victim Claudio, condemning him to death because he impregnated Juliet before their marriage.Claudio’s sister Isabella, who is entering a convent, pleads for her brother’s life. Angelo attempts to extort sex from her, but Isabella preserves her chastity. The duke, in disguise, eavesdrops as she tells her brother about Angelo’s behavior, then offers to ally himself with her against Angelo.Modern responses to the play show how it can be transformed by its reception in present culture to evoke continuing fascination. To some, the duke (the government) seems meddlesome; to others, he is properly imposing moral standards. Angelo and Isabella’s encounter exemplifies sexual harassment. Others see a woman’s right to control her body in Isabella’s choice between her virginity and her brother’s life. The authoritative edition of Measure for Measure from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers, includes:-The exact text of the printed book for easy cross-reference -Hundreds of hypertext links for instant navigation -Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play -Full explanatory notes conveniently linked to the text of the play -Scene-by-scene plot summaries -A key to the play’s famous lines and phrases -An introduction to reading Shakespeare’s language -An essay by a leading Shakespeare scholar providing a modern perspective on the play -Fresh images from the Folger Shakespeare Library’s vast holdings of rare books -An annotated guide to further readingEssay by Christy DesmetThe Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, is home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare’s printed works, and a magnet for Shakespeare scholars from around the globe.
