Sinossi

In "The Founding of New England," James Truslow Adams meticulously chronicles the early settlement of New England, offering a nuanced exploration of the social, political, and religious motivations that spurred the Pilgrims and Puritans to transcend the Atlantic. Adams employs a scholarly yet accessible literary style, blending rich narrative with incisive analysis to illuminate the complexities of the region's founding. Published in the context of early 20th-century American historiography, the work reflects an emerging desire to reconcile the nation's past with its contemporary identity, thereby situating New England's founding within broader themes of liberty and governance. James Truslow Adams, a noted American historian and author, was deeply influenced by his belief in the American Dream and the unique contributions of early settlers. His extensive research into primary sources and personal reflections on America's cultural heritage culminated in this seminal work, which underscores the societal dilemmas and triumphs faced during New England's formative years. Adams's keen understanding of historical context and his commitment to demystifying America's origins shaped his narrative approach. This book is an essential read for anyone intrigued by American history, social movements, or the complex interplay of religion and governance in the formation of a nation. Adams's insightful analysis serves as both an academic resource and a compelling story, making it a valuable addition to the library of scholars and history enthusiasts alike.

This is a true story. Master Joshua is a pansexual, polyamorous pro-Dom (a male Dominatrix). He leads a leather tribe and, when we met, was battling accusations of rape and abuse. Master Joshua was the intended subject of my story… until I became it. My own name doesn't matter. I can't use it here. Suffice it to say that I was a reporter and a comfortably married mother of two. But, following Joshua deeper and deeper into New York's sexual underground, I crossed the line between observer and participant. Our experiences changed me: I lied and cheated to facilitate them, though a lying cheater was not who I wanted to become. I wanted to remain a good wife and mother, and a decent person. So did Joshua. But we couldn't have our cake and eat it too… or could we? This is a true story, about one of the least understood and most sensationalized factions of LGBTQA+. But more so, it’s about my own family’s capacity to survive.

From 1792 to 1795, George Vancouver sailed the Pacific as the captain of his own expedition and as an agent of imperial ambition. To map a place is to control it, and Britain had its eyes on America's Pacific coast. And map it Vancouver did. His voyage was one of history's greatest feats of maritime daring, discovery, and diplomacy, and his marine survey of Hawaii and the Pacific coast was at its time the most comprehensive ever undertaken. But just two years after returning to Britain, the forty-year-old Vancouver, hounded by critics, shamed by public humiliation at the fists of an aristocratic sailor he had flogged, and blacklisted because of a perceived failure to follow the Admiralty's directives, died in poverty, nearly forgotten. In this riveting and perceptive biography, historian Stephen Bown delves into the events that destroyed Vancouver's reputation and restores his position as one of the greatest explorers of the Age of Discovery.

Women at War - The Pivotal Role...

Before the outbreak of World War II, women’s roles in society were primarily defined by traditional expectations of domesticity and support. The early 20th century saw most women confined to the home, tasked with caring for children, managing households, and supporting their husbands. While some women worked outside the home, their opportunities were limited to roles deemed suitable for their gender, such as teaching, nursing, and clerical work. A societal emphasis on strict gender roles reinforced the idea that women’s contributions were secondary to those of men.

Despite these restrictions, change was already stirring in many parts of the world. The suffrage movement had gained momentum in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, granting women the right to vote in some countries. This political shift signaled the beginning of a broader movement toward gender equality. Women’s participation in the workforce during World War I also laid important groundwork, as millions stepped into roles vacated by men who had gone to fight. Although many women were forced to relinquish these jobs after the war, the experience proved their capability and fueled the belief that women could contribute beyond the domestic sphere.

However, the interwar period brought mixed progress. The economic hardships of the Great Depression in the 1930s reinforced traditional values in some regions, with governments and employers often prioritizing men for scarce jobs. At the same time, women’s organizations continued to advocate for expanded rights, education, and opportunities. The period also saw significant cultural shifts, with women entering public life in new ways. The flapper era of the 1920s, for instance, challenged societal norms by embracing independence, freedom of expression, and modernity.
