  The Métis people, later one of the three recognized aboriginal groups in Canada, were an indigenous group that came from marriages between French traders and native women, but Scotch and English cultures were also heavy influencers among the Métis. The term comes from a Latin word for “to mix” and originally referred to the children of these relationships, but the Métis would grow to become a major intermediary between the white settlers moving across North America and native fur traders, and during the 19th century, the Métis “considered themselves a separate nation, different from other people, including the Indians and the French.” 
  Like other native groups, as settlers began further encroaching on territory they inhabited, tensions boiled. In June 1816, a group of Métis attacked Red River colonists and their acting governor at a point known as Seven Oaks. Cuthbert Grant, a Métis fighter, had carried out several attacks against the Red River Colony and Hudson’s Bay Company’s posts, and this pattern would continue until the whites were driven out of Red River altogether. 
  Of course, that local victory wouldn’t stop the inexorable march of settlement altogether, and over the decades, there would be more fighting, with the most notorious outbreak coming in the 1880s. That resistance movement is widely known today as the North-West Rebellion, and all the factors that had gone into forming Canada as it is recognizable today would be at play.

Without the benefit of salient literary instruction, I’m urged to write as providential inspiration may move while caring immensely about the outcome. I have learned that writing poems is cathartic and a wonderful laxative for the mind. Thus, to that question, I responded with the poem Take a Thought…Wholesome and Good to describe my way.   Addiction is now seen as an ordinary feature of human nature, an idea that introduces new doubts about the meaning of our desires. 
    
  Over the last forty years, a variety of developments in American science, politics, and culture have reimagined addiction in their own ways, but they share an important understanding: increasingly, addiction is described as normal, the natural result of a body that has been exposed to potent stimuli. This shift in thinking suggests that addiction is a condition latent in all of us, a common response to a society rich in thrills. 
    
  In Addiction Becomes Normal, Jaeyoon Park provides a history and critical analysis of the normalization of addiction in late-modern American society. By exploring addiction science, diagnostic manuals, judicial reform, and public health policy, he shows how seeing addiction as normal has flourished in recent decades and is supported throughout cultural life in the United States by the language of wellness, psychotherapy, and more. Building on Michel Foucault’s depiction of the human figure, Park argues that this shift reflects the emergence of a new American subject, one formed by the accretion of experiences. This view of the human subject challenges the idea that our compulsions reflect our characters, wills, or spirits.
