Sinossi

"Every Family Has a Different Story" invites young readers into the heartwarming and diverse world of families. Through the eyes of Alex, readers explore the many forms families can take, from two moms to grandparents raising children, single parents, and blended families. Each chapter introduces a different family structure, showing how love, care, and respect unite them. This book teaches children to appreciate and respect the differences in family dynamics while highlighting the importance of values, empathy, and inclusion. It reminds readers that the heart of any family is the love shared within it, no matter the shape it takes. By learning from one another and celebrating their unique traditions, children will understand that families are more than just those connected by blood—they’re the ones who love and support us through all of life’s ups and downs.

    In this charming debut, a Korean American girl harvests a perfectly ripe persimmon that she can’t wait to share with Grandma.

    When Joo Hong harvests a beautiful persimmon from her mom’s garden, she can’t wait to give it to her Grandma who is visiting from far away. However, the days leading up to her arrival feel like forever—and the persimmon is looking less and less perfect as time passes by.
    What can Joo Hong do to make sure it’s perfectly ripe—and not mushy and wrinkly—for Grandma’s visit?

    A tender story about three generations of Korean women and one perfect persimmon, this debut from author-illustrator Hannah Chung shows that even when things don’t go as planned, something even better may be in store.

    Sing a song o' sixpence, a handful of rye,
    Four-and-twenty blackbirds baked in a pie;
    When the pie was opened the birds began to sing,
    Wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the King?
    So, what does this strange old nursery song mean? Or is it just nonsense? If you have never heard the legend of Gilligren and the King's pie you will scarcely understand the above verse; so let Frank Baum, the man who wrote the Wizard of OZ, tell you the whole story, and then you will be able to better appreciate the rhyme.
    Gilligren was an orphan, and lived with an uncle and aunt who were very unkind to him. They cuffed him and scolded him upon the slightest provocation, and made his life very miserable indeed. Gilligren never rebelled against this treatment, but bore their cruelty silently and with patience, although often he longed to leave them and seek a home amongst kinder people.

    Rosewyn clutched the bundled baby in her arms as she ran through the icy winds of Hollins Shire’s brutal winter, shivering violently – but not from the cold. She shivered from fright and dread. The baby she held in her arms should have been loved and cared for like any other newborn, but the baby had been condemned to die by the King. His birth was against the law and saving him would mean certain death if she was caught. Even the news of his birth would aid the evil duke, Lord Raymond in overthrowing the entire kingdom. If Rosewyn’s secret is discovered, the kingdom could crumble.
    Tortured by guilt in condemning the child, the King struggles to keep his family together. When a mysterious boy arrives at the castle, things become more dangerous as Lord Raymond plots the royal family’s demise. In an effort to save his family and kingdom, the King has his young sons trained in survival skills for their protection, but when the secret of the new stranger is discovered, will the training be enough?Editorial Review
    Secrets of Hollins Castle is a delightful medieval fantasy adventure that stands out as a testament of love to the medieval fantasy genre - Christianson weaves a well-crafted tale that feels realistic to the genre, with especially powerful dialogue and relationship building that make the story stand out. The author does an excellent job balancing drama and tenderness without being melodramatic, such as when Queen Jennifry gives birth to her child to start the story. Characters are also introduced with good characterization quickly without overwhelming the reader, such as when the reader meets Lord Raymond with a snide comment. The character relationships between each other, which add to the mystery, also feel realistic and at times tender.
