Ramses II, also known as Ramses the Great, ascended to the throne of Egypt at the age of around twenty-five, marking the beginning of one of the most illustrious reigns in ancient Egyptian history. Born to Seti I and Queen Tuya, Ramses was the second son in a royal family with a rich history of military conquest and religious devotion. His early life was marked by a deep connection to his father, who was a powerful Pharaoh and who taught him the ways of leadership, military strategy, and governance.
Ramses II’s rise to power was in part due to the untimely death of his older brother, Amunherkhepeshef. His subsequent coronation followed the traditional Egyptian custom, but Ramses’s reign would quickly set him apart from his predecessors. Under Seti I’s rule, Egypt had already gained considerable strength, and Ramses inherited an empire that was well-positioned for further military expansion. Yet, it was his own brilliance, both as a military leader and as a strategist, that allowed him to solidify his place as one of the greatest Pharaohs of Egypt.
One of the first significant moments of his reign was his involvement in the Battle of Kadesh. Although young at the time, Ramses’s leadership during this critical battle would define his reputation as a warrior king. Despite facing a large Hittite force, Ramses II's audacity and resilience ensured Egypt's power remained strong. Though the battle ended in a stalemate, Ramses managed to secure his status through subsequent peace negotiations, leaving a lasting legacy on Egypt’s military and political landscape.

On a journey of discovery into her parents history of love and fame in war torn Italy, Adela Edgecombe discovered a secret deception within love letters and from family who had been tight-lipped about the scandals for decades. Bestselling author Jincy Willett describes the story as follows: "Since every human personality is at root mysterious, all families present us with an abundance of mysteries, the chief of which is often how marriages ever happened in the first place. In her family memoir, Adela Edgecombe tackles that mystery head-on, uncovering a web of circumstances peculiar to place and time. The place is the Province of Salerno, Italy; the time,1944, the depths of World War II. A young American GI meets an impoverished Italian family, grows to care for them, and, as he leaves for the front, promises a nine-year-old child that one day he will return and help them. And does the man, against all odds, keep that promise? Judging from the fairy-tale wedding that took place in Passiano in 1951 and was featured in Life Magazine, it would seem so. "Edgecombe explores that fairy tale moment, how it came to pass, and what followed after. She digs fearlessly into the mystery of an unhappy marriage that began with such photogenic joy and hope. Read Whispers of Betrayal for a well-researched, surprising, and moving tale which reminds us that the casualties of war are many and varied."

    Unlocking Scots - The Secret...

    Clive Young

The Scots language is the hidden treasure of Scottish culture. For many of us it is still how we speak to each other, how we express our feelings, our humour, even our Scottishness. It not only connects us to our communities at an emotional level but also links us to our past. Scots was created by millions of voices coming together to share words, phrases and jokes; to understand, act on (and often laugh at) the world around them.

Aye, but what exactly is 'Scots' anyway?
Usually spoken in a mix with Scottish English, at least nowadays, is it really a language at all?
    Was it ever?
    And what about its future?

Dr Clive Young embarks on a quest to learn about the secret life of the language he spoke as a bairn. Along the way, he encounters centuries of intense argument on the very nature of Scots, from the first dictionaries, through MacDiarmid, The Broons, Trainspotting and on to present-day Twitter rammies. (And of course, endless stushies about how to spell it.) Some still dismiss Scots as 'just' a dialect, slang or bad English.

Behind this everyday disdain Dr Young uncovers a troubling history of official neglect and marginalisation of our unique minority language, offset only by a defiant and inspiring linguistic loyalty.

A refreshing counterbalance to the usual gloomy prognosis of Scots' supposedly 'inevitable' demise, Dr Young sketches out a practical roadmap to revitalise Scotland's beleaguered tongue and simple ways we can all keep it 'hale an hearty' for future generations.
