Sinossi

In "A Voyage Towards the South Pole and Round the World," James Cook chronicles his monumental 1772-1775 expedition that cemented his legacy as one of history's greatest explorers. The text is a masterful blend of adventure and scientific inquiry, richly detailed with observations of the natural world and indigenous cultures. Cook's meticulous narrative style, marked by clarity and precision, invites readers into the challenging and often perilous realities of 18th-century maritime exploration, setting a standard for voyage literature that would influence generations of explorers and writers alike. James Cook, a British navigator and cartographer of humble origins, deftly combined his passion for exploration with a rigorous scientific approach, motivated by both the spirit of discovery and the era's imperial ambitions. His earlier voyages, including the first to map New Zealand and Australia, laid the groundwork for this more ambitious undertaking. Cook's interactions with diverse peoples and his commitment to documenting their lives reflect a deep-seated curiosity and respect that contrasts markedly with contemporary attitudes toward colonization. This seminal work is a must-read for enthusiasts of maritime history, exploration, and the intricate web of encounters that shaped the modern world. Cook's insights into uncharted territories and his reflections on human nature offer timeless lessons, making this book essential for anyone interested in the interplay of adventure, science, and sociocultural dynamics.

A case for sex education that puts it in historical and philosophical context.

In the United States, sex education is more than just an uncomfortable rite of passage: it’s a political hobby horse that is increasingly out of touch with young people’s needs. In Touchy Subject, philosopher Lauren Bialystok and historian Lisa M. F. Andersen unpack debates over sex education, explaining why it’s worth fighting for, what points of consensus we can build upon, and what sort of sex education schools should pursue in the future.

Andersen surveys the history of school-based sex education in the United States, describing the key question driving reform in each era. In turn, Bialystok analyzes the controversies over sex education to make sense of the arguments and offer advice about how to make educational choices today. Together, Bialystok and Andersen argue for a novel framework, Democratic Humanistic Sexuality Education, which exceeds the current conception of “comprehensive sex education” while making room for contextual variation. More than giving an honest run-down of the birds and the bees, sex education should respond to the features of young people’s evolving worlds, especially the digital world, and the inequities that put some students at much higher risk of sexual harm than others. Throughout the book, the authors show how sex education has progressed and how the very concept of “progress” remains contestable.

Jesus told us one definitive sign that must happen before His return: the appearing of the abomination of desolation. We are told in two gospels to know what it is and to understand its impact on us and the world. Did you know that we are only two prophetic signs away from the appearing of the beast of the Revelation? Did you know that 99.3% of the world is already in a biometric identity system that will give the beast control over every financial transaction in the world? We are also only two signs away from his control and murderous attack against Christians and Jews. In this volume of the End Times Handbook, we discover the abomination of desolation in Daniel, we prove the one to whom it points, we learn the personality of the final world ruler, we discover what to expect during his rule, we discuss the infamous mark of the beast, we learn how Christians and Jews will be affected during his rule, we discuss the timing of his appearance, the timing of Jesus return in light of his appearing and how much of the end times the elect of God will experience before being caught away to meet Jesus in the clouds. Jesus is clear in Matthew 24:29-31 that His elect will not be gone before the beast appears: Are you ready for what is ahead? In this volume of the End Times Handbook, we grapple with the discomfort of Scripture as we learn how much of the beast kingdom the elect will experience and the signs for which to watch. Now is the time to get ourselves and others ready for what is ahead. If we wait until these events happen, it will be too late. How ready are you? This book narrated by the author will help you find out.

The Middle East, a region at the crossroads of Africa, Asia, and Europe, has a complex and multifaceted history that has shaped its modern political and social dynamics. Understanding the historical background of this area is essential for grasping the causes of its current conflicts, including the Gulf Wars. The region’s significance goes beyond its geographical location; it is home to some of the world’s oldest civilizations, such as the Sumerians, Egyptians, and Persians, which laid the foundation for much of human civilization, particularly in terms of writing, law, and governance.
The historical trajectory of the Middle East has been deeply influenced by the rise and fall of empires. In ancient times, the region was dominated by powerful empires such as the Persian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire, in particular, played a central role in shaping the political landscape of the Middle East for over 400 years. Its collapse after World War I marked the beginning of a new era, characterized by the creation of modern nation-states and the imposition of arbitrary borders by Western powers. The dismantling of the Ottoman Empire led to the carving up of its territories under the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a secret 1916 accord between Britain and France that laid the groundwork for many of the modern-day conflicts in the region.
The aftermath of World War I also saw the emergence of European mandates in the Middle East. The British and French took control of territories such as Iraq, Palestine, and Syria, which created tensions among various ethnic and religious groups. The artificial borders drawn by colonial powers failed to account for the region's complex social fabric, where multiple ethnicities, religions, and cultures coexisted. This imposition of external governance set the stage for future conflicts, as regional communities struggled for autonomy and independence.
