Sinossi

"Tasman Exploration" recounts the voyages of Abel Tasman, a key figure in 17th-century Dutch maritime exploration. Operating under the Dutch East India Company (VOC), Tasman charted significant portions of Australia and New Zealand, contributing to European expansion in the Pacific. The book highlights the economic and political drivers behind the VOC's ambitious expeditions, while also providing a biographical account of Tasman's navigational skills and leadership challenges. It emphasizes that while Tasman’s voyages didn't yield immediate riches, they significantly expanded European knowledge of the Pacific region, laying the groundwork for future exploration.

The book delves into Tasman's two major voyages, detailing geographical discoveries and encounters with Indigenous populations. For instance, the 1642-43 voyage led to the European discovery of Tasmania and New Zealand. Using primary sources like original logs and newly translated Dutch archival material, the book offers a fresh perspective, moving beyond a Eurocentric view by incorporating available Indigenous perspectives.

The book is structured to systematically explore Tasman's life and voyages, beginning with the VOC's context, progressing to Tasman's biography, and culminating in an assessment of his legacy.

The most famous man of the Middle Ages was probably Charlemagne, and few would argue that he was also the most important man during those centuries. Upon the death of his father, Pepin the Short, in 768, Charlemagne became King of the Franks, and he proceeded to create one of the largest European empires since the collapse of Rome. Through his conquests across Western Europe and Italy, Charlemagne became the first Holy Roman Emperor after a famous imperial coronation by Pope Leo III. In becoming the first Holy Roman Emperor, Charlemagne essentially established the new order on the European continent.
In a world fascinated by men like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan is one of history’s greatest and most famous conquerors. No man, before or since, has ever started with so little and gone on to achieve so much. From a noble family but raised in poverty that drove him to the brink of starvation, Genghis Khan rose to control the second-largest empire the world has ever known (the largest being, arguably, the British Empire of the 18th and 19th centuries), and easily the largest empire conquered by a single man.
Saladin is widely considered one of the greatest generals in history and one of the most famous leaders of the Middle Ages, but he remains a paradox, both in personal and in historical terms. A military genius, he first served other generals and was overshadowed, late in life, by his greatest rival, Richard I of England. He was far more admired by his Christian enemies, who extolled his chivalry, than some of his Muslim rivals, who fought him for control of Egypt and Syria in the 12th century. His Christian enemies continued his name long after it was forgotten in the Middle East, only to spark a revival of his reputation in Arab culture in the 20th century.

A New York Times bestselling author and leadership coach shares his invaluable secrets for successfully motivating people to action in low-trust, high-stakes environments. For years, Scott Mann worked in environments where nobody was coming to save him, his men, or the exhausted majority of Afghans they served. He learned that the best way to get big sh*t done and bridge vast divisions is to meet people where they are, not where you want them to be. He calls this approach Rooftop Leadership. Wherever you live, work, or play—in real estate, in corporate sales, in HR, for a community volunteer group, in a non-profit, in politics—the hardest thing to find these days is authentic connection with other people. The social trends and fraying of civil society after more than two years of prolonged isolation from Covid, mass technology, organizational strain, and blinking-red stress levels on our emotional dashboards have taken a toll. With inspiring stories about his experiences in the military and candid reflections on civilian life, Scott Mann connects readers to a more ancient, primal aspect of their nature rendered dormant by the modern world. Nobody Is Coming to Save You shows readers how to navigate the Churn that's dividing us and learn to make new and deeper connections to ourselves, each other, and the natural world around us.
