Sinossi

This edition includes the following editor's analysis: "The Life of Samuel Johnson,” an ode to friendship and admiration by James Boswell

First published in 1791, “The Life of Samuel Johnson” is a biography of English writer Samuel Johnson written by his friend and admirer James Boswell. Boswell’s biography is considered by many scholars to be one of the finest pieces of biographical writing in the English language.
Boswell was acquainted with Samuel Johnson during his life but did not publish the work until seven years after Johnson’s death. The work was from the beginning a critical and popular success and represents a landmark in the development of the modern genre of biography.
Later research has shown that Boswell took liberties with some of Johnson’s quotations and censored important incidents from his biography. However, the level of detail included in the work makes it a valuable resource on Samuel Johnson and the eighteenth century.

A tale of one man's obsession with rainforest jewels, this is the story of an impossible dream: a quest to see every one of the world's most elusive avian gems--a group of birds known as pittas--in a single year. Insightful, compelling, and laugh-out-loud funny, this is more than a book about birds. It's a true story detailing the lengths to which a man will go to escape his midlife crisis. A travelogue with a difference, it follows a journey from the suburban straitjacket of High Wycombe to the steamy, leech-infested rainforests of remotest Asia, Africa, and Australia. Dangerous situations, personal traumas, and logistical nightmares threaten The Jewel Hunter's progress. Will venomous snakes or razor-clawed bears intervene? Or will running out of fuel mid-Pacific ultimately sink the mission? The race is on. . . . If you've ever yearned to escape your day job, wondered what makes men tick, or simply puzzled over how to make a truly world-class cup of tea, this is a book for you.

"This book may cement [Acevedo's] status as one of today's best boxing journalists." —Kirkus Reviews

Boxing has one of the richest literary traditions in sports. From A. J. Liebling to Donald McRae, the sweet science has consistently inspired great writing. The work of Carlos Acevedo stands firmly in that distinguished tradition.

In this expanded edition of Sporting Blood, Acevedo adds two new masterful essays—one about the murder of Stanley Ketchel, the other about the gangland slaying of Battling Siki—to those that made his debut collection an instant classic. Other highlights include a moving meditation on Muhammad Ali; a penetrating look at the enigmatic Charles "Sonny" Liston; and a vivid profile of Mike Tyson, which brilliantly conjures the Boy King's late 1980s reign of terror. Acevedo also offers many other unforgettable tales from boxing's dark side, featuring Jack Johnson, Joe Frazier, Roberto Duran, Aaron Pryor, Jake LaMotta, and more.

Sporting Blood is a poetic throwback, a singular book that evokes journalism's golden age and places Acevedo among the best sportswriters of his generation.
