Sinossi

This is Chapter 2 of the full printed book "Underworld and Archetypes Fully Illustrated". Chapter Two examines the myths of descent and reveals how these can be useful tools in encouraging us to positively engage with our own times of loss, grief and change.
Looking at today's culture through the lens of mythology, James Bennett sees a split between heaven and earth. For millennia humanity strove for intellectual ascent but now, Bennett states, to restore global health we must turn our attention downwards: to the Underworld:• Each Archetype of the Underworld is a consciousness of our physical bodies, our material substance and the Earth.• Heaven and hell represent the polarized intellect and body. The darkness of the underworld symbolizes its obscurity to intellect when opposed.• Intellect's repudiation of the physical realm causes unconscious worship of the Great Mother in her dark aspect. • The mythological stories of journeys through hades were written as guides to those in recovery from trauma or addiction: people who were "going through hell". • The meanings of the myths will only come to us through intuition: "Allow the stories, pictures and images to sit with you and speak to you, to spark your own connections and open doors for you in unexpected meaningful ways."Author James Bennett, is a practicing psychotherapist.

Epigenetics can potentially revolutionize our understanding of the structure and behavior of biological life on Earth. It explains why mapping an organism's genetic code is not enough to determine how it develops or acts and shows how nurture combines with nature to engineer biological diversity. Surveying the twenty-year history of the field while also highlighting its latest findings and innovations, this volume provides a readily understandable introduction to the foundations of epigenetics. Nessa Carey, a leading epigenetics researcher, connects the field's arguments to such diverse phenomena as how ants and queen bees control their colonies; why tortoiseshell cats are always female; why some plants need cold weather before they can flower; and how our bodies age and develop disease. Reaching beyond biology, epigenetics now informs work on drug addiction, the long-term effects of famine, and the physical and psychological consequences of childhood trauma. Carey concludes with a discussion of the future directions for this research and its ability to improve human health and well-being.

Can an American family live without Chinese-made goods? “A wry look at the ingenuity it takes to shun the planet’s fastest-growing economy.” —Bloomberg News   “Journalist Bongiorni, on a post-Christmas day mired deep in plastic toys and electronics equipment, makes up her mind to live for a year without buying any products made in China, a decision spurred less by notions of idealism or fair trade—though she does note troubling statistics on job loss and trade deficits—than simply ‘to see if it can be done.’ In this more personal vein, Bongiorni tells often funny, occasionally humiliating stories centering around her difficulty procuring sneakers, sunglasses, DVD players and toys for two young children and a skeptical husband . . . Bongiorni is a graceful, self-deprecating writer, and her comic adventures in self-imposed inconvenience cast an interesting sideways glance at the personal effects of globalism.” —Publishers Weekly
