Summary

In "Six Centuries of English Poetry: Tennyson to Chaucer," James Baldwin masterfully traverses the evolution of English poetry, offering a profound exploration of themes that resonate throughout centuries. His keen analytical lens dissects the works of luminaries such as Tennyson, Browning, and Chaucer, presenting a tapestry of linguistic finesse and emotional depth. Baldwin's prose is characterized by its lyrical quality, reflecting the poetic essence he examines, while also contextualizing the historical and cultural milieu that shaped these poets' outputs. This work engages with the intricate interplay between language and social commentary, making it a vital resource for both literary enthusiasts and scholars alike. James Baldwin, an acclaimed writer and social critic, was deeply influenced by his own experiences as an African American in a racially segregated society. His understanding of identity and the human condition permeates his literary pursuits, infusing this collection with critical insights into how poetry serves as a medium for exploring the complexities of existence. Baldwin's passion for storytelling and his desire to bridge the divide between art and activism are evident throughout this work. I highly recommend "Six Centuries of English Poetry" for anyone seeking a thoughtful engagement with English literature's rich heritage. Baldwin'Äôs incisive commentary not only enriches our appreciation of these poets but also invites readers to reflect on poetry'Äôs enduring relevance in grappling with contemporary societal challenges.

For over 60 million people, work in America has been a story of declining wages, insecurity, and unsafe conditions, especially amid the coronavirus epidemic. This new and troubling reality has galvanized media and policymakers, but all the while a different and little-known story of rebirth and struggle has percolated just below the surface.

On the Job is the first account of a new kind of labor movement, one that is happening locally, quietly, and among our country's most vulnerable—but essential—workers. Noted public health expert Celeste Monforton and award-winning journalist Jane M. Von Bergen crisscrossed the country, speaking with workers of all backgrounds and uncovering the stories of hundreds of new, worker-led organizations (often simply called worker centers) that have successfully achieved higher wages, safer working conditions, and on-the-job dignity for their members.

On the Job describes ordinary people finding their voice and challenging power: from housekeepers in Chicago and Houston; to poultry workers in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and Springdale, Arkansas; and construction workers across the state of Texas. An inspiring book for dark times, On the Job reveals that labor activism is actually alive and growing—and holds the key to a different future for all working people.

The Habsburg Dynasty, one of the most influential and enduring families in European history, laid the foundation for an empire that would dominate much of Central Europe for over six centuries. The family’s rise to power was not a result of military conquest or economic dominance, but rather strategic marriages, political alliances, and a series of calculated moves that allowed them to amass territories and influence across Europe. At the heart of the Habsburg's success was their ability to use dynastic marriages to expand their reach, securing land, titles, and influence through the marriages of their children to powerful European houses.
The origins of the Habsburgs can be traced to the 11th century, with the rise of the family’s first significant member, Radbot, a nobleman from what is now Switzerland. However, it was not until the 13th century that the Habsburgs began their ascent to prominence under the leadership of Rudolf I. In 1273, Rudolf was elected King of Germany, marking the beginning of the Habsburgs' long reign in Central Europe. This election not only established their position within the Holy Roman Empire but also set the stage for their future expansion.
The key to their continued rise lay in the Habsburgs’ unparalleled ability to form advantageous marriages. Rather than relying on military might, the family expanded its territorial holdings through strategic unions with other royal and noble families. One of the most significant of these marriages was that of Maximilian I in 1477 to Mary of Burgundy, which brought the Habsburgs the rich territories of the Burgundian Netherlands. This marriage effectively linked the Habsburgs with the wealth and influence of the Low Countries, establishing them as key players in European politics.

John Fisher and Thomas More -...

In 1929, nearly four hundred years after the deaths of Saints Thomas More and John Fisher, G.K. Chesterton observed in words equally attributable to Fisher, “Blessed Thomas More is more important at this moment than at any moment since his death, even perhaps the great moment of his dying; but he is not quite so important as he will be in a hundred years.” Judge Robert J Conrad, Jr. anticipates Chesterton’s one-hundred-year mark in a collection of stories from the lives of More and Fisher, demonstrating how their sanctity and integrity carried them and those who loved them through tumultuous and heart-wrenching times which, perhaps surprisingly, bear a striking resemblance to the present epoch. At first blush, nothing could appear more different than the pre-industrial sixteenth century and the tech-centered modern era. But a closer examination presents a similar tale of political maneuvering and hostile hearings, legal corruption, viral pandemics, riots, suppression of speech, loss of religious liberty, and a profound indifference for truth. Judge Conrad effortlessly weaves together tales of both men and what made them who they were—family, faith, friendship, oaths, vocation, detachment, conscience—inviting those who strive for holiness down the same narrow path these two martyrs walked with a clarity founded upon the truth of Christ’s Church, and a wit that charmed even their persecutors.  Both these men refused to consent to the theological farce that would permit the king’s divorce and remarriage and drive a wedge into the unity of the Christian world, and both paid for their convictions with their lives. More died the king’s good servant and God’s first. Fisher approached his execution with joy befit for a wedding. And yet, both stand today, long after they are gone, as models of courage in a time when it is desperately needed.

    The Wisdom Years - Unleashing...

We are now experiencing one of the most significant revolutions in human life: the dramatic rise in life expectancy. This revolution does not imply, as most people usually think, that we've simply got more years of old age. Rather, it implies the formation of a new period in human life: the Age of Wisdom. This age is qualitatively different from the adulthood that precedes it and the old age that follows. People who are able to prepare themselves for this new age will be able to enjoy an active, wise and satisfying stage of life, which will enable them to delay their 'old age' to the very end of their life.

The Wisdom Years provides a practical, thought-provoking and life-changing read for both people embarking on retirement as well as younger people who would like to mindfully prepare themselves in advance. Derived from Dr Lanir's lifetime of work experience in identifying mindsets that are no longer helpful or relevant to current reality, it reveals how we can reframe our thought processes and mindset so that we can live life based on our 'functional age' rather than our 'chronological age'.

The result is a book that carries a unique and inspiring message: life in the wisdom years is to be enjoyed and planned for as a new and uplifting journey of personal evolution.
