  Although Napoleon was exiled, he was allowed to retain the title of Emperor and was given de facto control over Elba. But it should not be surprising the man who once ruled Europe was not content with the island of Elba. Separated from his family and cast away on a small island, Napoleon attempted suicide by taking a poison pill, but he had first carried the pill with him on the retreat from Moscow, rightly concerned about an uncertain fate at the time. The aging process had fatally weakened the pill, which stopped it from fatally weakening Napoleon. 
  Though the emperor busied himself developing the island’s industries and had established a miniature army and navy, he must still have found time to brood upon his situation and could not have helped but think of himself as reduced to laughing stock. The “Emperor of Elba” was a poor title for a man who had once ruled over more than half of mainland Europe. Even some of Napoleon’s old Marshals, like Murat, now controlled more territory than the man who had raised them in the first place. To add insult to injury, the salary he had been promised in the Treaty of Fontainebleau and that was meant to keep him in relative luxury was often late and sometimes failed to arrive at all. Coupled with his deteriorating health and the express refusal of the Austrian court to let him speak or write to his wife and son, Napoleon must have felt himself well and truly slighted. Beaten, but not defeated, he resolved to show the Coalition powers he could still make Europe tremble. 
  Of all the incredible military feats Napoleon accomplished, none were more impressive than his escape from Elba and his return to France, which was literally a bloodless revolution. On February 26, 1815, Napoleon escaped from Elba, and in a desperate gamble, he landed on the French mainland with less than a thousand men and marched on Paris.

  After the Citadel and Officer Candidate School, Andrew Z. Adkins Jr. was sent to the 80th Infantry Division, then training in the California-Arizona desert. There, he was assigned as an 81mm mortar section leader in Company H, 2nd Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment. 
   
   
   
  Lieutenant Adkins and his fellow soldiers took part in light hedgerow fighting that served to shake the division down and familiarize the troops and their officers with combat. While scouting for mortar positions in the woods, Adkins met a group of Germans and shot one of them dead with his carbine. This baptism in blood settled the question faced by every novice combatant: He was cool under fire, capable of killing when facing the enemy. 
   
   
   
  Adkins acted with skill and courage, placing himself at the forefront of the action whenever he could. His extremely aggressive delivery of critical supplies to a cut-off unit in an embattled French town earned him a Bronze Star, the first in his battalion. 
   
   
   
  Before his death, Andy Adkins was able to face his memory of war as bravely as he faced war itself. In 1944-45, he did his duty to his men and country—and here, he serves new generations of military and civilian listeners.

  The Kingdom of Kush, an ancient African civilization, flourished along the Nile River in what is now modern-day Sudan. This powerful kingdom played a crucial role in the history of northeastern Africa, often interacting with its northern neighbor, Egypt. The land of Kush was known for its rich natural resources, strategic location, and unique cultural identity, which set it apart from other civilizations of the time. 
  Geographically, Kush was centered in the region known as Nubia, a stretch of land between the first and sixth cataracts of the Nile. This location provided fertile lands for agriculture, supported by the annual flooding of the river. Unlike Egypt, which relied heavily on the predictable flooding of the Nile, the Kushites also adapted to drier conditions, developing irrigation techniques to sustain their crops. The region was abundant in valuable resources such as gold, ivory, ebony, and exotic animal skins, making it an important trade hub in the ancient world. These resources attracted merchants from Egypt, the Mediterranean, and even as far as the Middle East, contributing to the kingdom's economic strength. 
  Kushite civilization was heavily influenced by its relationship with Egypt, but it also maintained distinct cultural and political traditions. Early Kushite settlements date back to around 2500 BCE, and by the time of the Egyptian Middle and New Kingdoms, Kush had grown into a formidable power. Egyptian pharaohs often sought control over Nubia due to its wealth, leading to periods of conquest and integration. However, Kush was not merely a passive recipient of Egyptian influence. It developed its own identity, blending Egyptian religious beliefs with native Nubian traditions, which would later be reflected in Kushite art, architecture, and burial practices.
