Sinossi

Darius I was the third king of the Persian Achaemenid Empire. Also called Darius the Great, he ruled the empire at its peak, when it included much of West Asia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, parts of the Balkans, portions of north and northeast Africa including Egypt, eastern Libya, coastal Sudan, Eritrea, as well as most of Pakistan, the Aegean Islands and northern Greece / Thrace-Macedonia.

Darius ascended the throne by overthrowing Gaumata, the alleged magus usurper of Bardiya with the assistance of six other Persian noble families; Darius was crowned the following morning. The new king met with rebellions throughout his kingdom and quelled them each time. A major event in Darius's life was his expedition to punish Athens and Eretria for their aid in the Ionian Revolt and subjugate Greece. Darius expanded his empire by conquering Thrace and Macedon and invading Scythia, home of the Scythians, nomadic tribes who invaded Media and had previously killed Cyrus the Great.

Darius organized the empire by dividing it into provinces and placing satraps to govern it. He organized a new uniform monetary system, along with making Aramaic the official language of the empire. Darius also worked on construction projects throughout the empire, focusing on Susa, Pasargadae, Persepolis, Babylon and Egypt. Darius devised a codification of laws for Egypt. He also had the cliff-face Behistun Inscription carved, an autobiography of great modern linguistic significance. Darius also started many massive architectural projects, including magnificent palaces in Persepolis and Susa.

Growing up, I never thought any of my thoughts were unhealthy. I assumed, like most of us, through the lens of childhood innocence that everyone thought the way I did. I remember thinking regularly that my life and experiences are no different than anyone else’s, rationalizing the abnormalities of childhood in the ’80s and ’90s where the drama was so regular it felt normal. Most of this book still, in a way, feels normal. But it’s only through the lens of living a life with others and a close connection to my God that I realize how broken we all are.
If you have ever struggled with having your thoughts control your life rather than you being in control of your thoughts, this book is for you. It’s always been important to me to be authentic, open, and honest with how I’m feeling. It has gotten me in trouble many times, but overall, I still feel like being vulnerable is worth it. This book is a vulnerable attempt to have readers relate to the struggle that many of us still aren’t comfortable addressing in ourselves.
Through over a decade of struggling therapy, reflection, learning to grieve, I believe my story will resonate with others like me. I want them to know, that although their story is unique, they are not alone in this battle. They, like me, can overcome. I want to tell you my story of growing upward.

In December 1937, the Chinese capital, Nanjing, falls and the Japanese army unleash an orgy of torture, murder, and rape. Over the course of six weeks, hundreds of thousands of civilians and prisoners of war are killed. At the very onset of the atrocities, the Danish supervisor at a cement plant just outside the city, 26-year-old Bernhard Arp Sindberg, opens the factory gates and welcomes in 10,000 Chinese civilians to safety. He becomes an Asian equivalent of Oskar Schindler, the savior of Jews in the Holocaust.

This biography follows Sindberg from his childhood and on his first adventures as a sailor and a Foreign Legionnaire to the 104 days as a rescuer of thousands of helpless men, women, and children in the darkest hour of the Sino-Japanese War. After his remarkable achievement, he receded back into obscurity, spending decades at sea and becoming a naturalized American citizen, before dying of old age in Los Angeles in 1983.

The book sets the record straight by providing the first complete account of Sindberg's life in English. What emerges is the surprising tale of a person who was average in every respect but rose to the occasion when faced with unimaginable brutality, discovering an inner strength and courage that transformed him into one of the great humanitarian figures of the twentieth century and an inspiration for our modern age.

Everyone reported on the Murdaugh murders from the outside. This is the story from within.
For twenty-one years, Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson was more than the Murdaugh family's housekeeper—she was Maggie's closest confidante, a witness to the family's private moments, and the keeper of secrets no outsider could access. She fixed Alex's collar on the morning of June 7, 2021. She cooked the last meal Maggie and Paul would ever eat. And she was the first person Alex called after he murdered them.
When Alex asked Blanca to clean the house the next morning, she walked into a crime scene frozen in lies. Pots stuffed in the refrigerator when they should have been on the stove. Maggie's pajamas folded with underwear she never wore to bed. A damp beach towel that shouldn't exist. Khaki pants—the same ones Alex wore that morning—wet in the laundry. To investigators, these were meaningless details. To someone who knew the family intimately, they were a confession written in the language of daily life.
Drawing on Blanca's testimony, insider knowledge, and unique observations alongside extensive research and trial records, Karen R Allen reveals the story no journalist sitting in the courtroom could tell. The small details that exposed the lies. The conversations that revealed motive. The evidence hidden in plain sight that only an insider would recognize.
The truth about the Murdaugh murders wasn't found in the courtroom alone. It was waiting in the details of daily life.

Though many of us know ourselves to be believers, it can be easy to lose our sense of direction when disappointment abounds. Maybe it is our bills that are piling up, our circumstances have become overwhelming, or the discouragement of watching disaster unfold in the world around us.
Heneka is feeling this way. Although he has always striven to believe in his hopes for himself, he finds himself feeling farther and farther from the life he desires. He’s ashamed to admit it, but he finds himself contemptuous and jealous of others, bitter against the world, and despairing at the thought of the future. So, hoping for answers, he decides to finally open the stack of letters from his Father sitting, unopened, on his desk.
Over the course of Unopened Letters, Heneka will learn, along with the help of his insightful friend Amita, the hard truth of just how far he’s strayed from his faith—and the perhaps harder-to-swallow lesson of just how easy it is to come back. As he opens each letter, one by one, he takes up their subjects in conversation with Amita: from where the desire to blame others for our pain arises, the root of doubt in the human heart, and ultimately, what reason we have to always trust in God’s path for us, no matter how far we’ve strayed.
Thoughtful, heartful, and true, the dialogue that unfolds in Unopened Letters invites you to reflect on your own faith journey and inspires you to also respond to the Father.
