Summary

"Thermophotovoltaics Basics" introduces the innovative field of thermophotovoltaics (TPV), exploring how heat, often considered waste, can be directly converted into electricity. This book examines the science behind TPV systems, which use thermal radiation and specialized photovoltaic cells to capture and convert heat energy. One intriguing aspect discussed is the use of selective emitters to control thermal radiation, maximizing the efficiency of energy conversion. The book also highlights the potential of TPV technology in waste heat recovery and distributed power generation, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional energy sources.

The book progresses from fundamental principles of thermal radiation, including blackbody radiation, to the practical design and application of TPV devices. It delves into the materials used, such as gallium antimonide (GaSb) and indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs), and their impact on system performance. Readers gain insights into spectral control strategies and the optimization of TPV cells for infrared light. The approach combines theoretical models with experimental data and case studies, providing a comprehensive understanding of TPV technology's potential in combined heat and power (CHP) systems and other applications.

This book distinguishes itself by providing a practical and accessible understanding of TPV technology, making it valuable for students, researchers, and engineers in physics, electrical engineering, and materials science. By presenting complex concepts in a clear and concise manner, "Thermophotovoltaics Basics" bridges the gap between scientific theory and engineering practice. The goal is to present the material in a way that stimulates innovation in energy conversion technologies.

The investors are pressuring the company leadership to adopt more formal procedures. Specifically they would like the start up to submit a formal budget for the investors to approve.
You have been asked to teach and coach the company leadership how budgeting works in an Agile context.
    What should you tell them?
This case and the others in the series come from the real-world experiences of a group of Scrum professionals who meet regularly to discuss the Scrum Framework and how to apply it to actual situations they have encountered. These discussions have been led since 2015 by Frederik Mark Fowler, A Doctor of Scrum and Holder of the Professional Scrum Master level III certification awarded by Scrum.org. This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
What if reality is not objects in empty space, but a living architecture built from reflection, information and infinite possibility?
Between Light and Infinity offers a revolution in perspective. It proposes that everything in existence - from particles and planets to life and consciousness emerges from an underlying network of spherical reflections. Light is constantly absorbed, reshaped, and re-emitted by matter, water, air and even the atoms within us. This endless circulation of information creates a cosmic mirror system in which nothing is isolated and every interaction matters.
Drawing from modern physics, cosmology, systems theory, and the introspective depth of lived experience, this book presents a unified understanding of how the universe evolves, learns, and organises itself across all scales. Instead of approaching a “theory of everything” through equations alone, it approaches it through patterns - the universal feedback loops that generate structure, complexity, and consciousness.
    You will discover:
    • How light acts as the connective tissue of reality
    • How information forms the hidden architecture beneath matter
    • How life and mind emerge from cosmic reflection
    • Why the universe continually evolves toward complexity
    • How consciousness fits naturally into the fabric of existence
    • And why you are an active reflector in this infinite system
Both expansive and deeply personal, Between Light and Infinity invites the reader to step into a new relationship with reality - one in which every moment is part of an infinite conversation between energy, matter, and awareness. It is a book for seekers, thinkers, scientists, creators and anyone who has ever felt that the universe is both mysterious and meaningful.
This is not merely a theory - it’s a new way of seeing everything.

Dick Carter: Yacht Designer - In...

Not many 'amateur' yacht designers would dare to enter the first boat they had ever designed into the epic offshore Fastnet Race, let alone with the intention of winning it. But that is what Dick Carter did in 1964, beating all 151 other yachts, some sailed by the most notable sailors of the day. He repeated the feat 4 years later with another of his own designs (which also won the Admiral's Cup that year as top boat and top team), but by then he could certainly not be described as an 'amateur' yacht designer. His radical innovations created fast and comfortable boats which were much in demand in this, the golden age of offshore racing. They were commissioned by the top sailors and succeeded in winning the Admiral's Cup, Southern Cross Series, One Ton Cup, Two Ton Cup and many of the biggest races. He even went on to design the massive 128-foot Vendredi Treize for Jean-Yves Terlain to sail single-handed in the 1972 OSTAR (trans-Atlantic) race – the longest boat ever to have been raced single-handed. But after just a decade at the top of his game, he quit the world of sailing and moved on to other challenges. He hadn't been heard of for so long that sailors assumed he was dead. His surprise appearance at the funeral of Ted Hood gave rise to the suggestion that he wrote this book. It is beautifully produced with many fabulous photographs and boat plans and was first published in the US by Seapoint Books and is now published in the UK by Fernhurst Books. While his career as a yacht designer may have been brief, the impact of his innovations has lasted the test of time. Who today would think of an offshore yacht without internal halyards in the mast or that the rudder always had to be fixed to the keel? These concepts, and many more, were first introduced by Dick Carter.
