Sinossi

"Medieval Crop Machines" explores the mechanical ingenuity applied to agriculture during the medieval period, revealing a landscape of innovation often overshadowed by traditional historical narratives. From the 5th to the 15th centuries, advancements in planting, harvesting, threshing, and winnowing technologies significantly boosted agricultural output, supporting growing populations.

One intriguing aspect is the medieval understanding and application of mechanical principles such as levers and gears, adapting them to create functional crop machines despite limited resources. These machines, though simple by modern standards, demonstrate a clear grasp of mechanical advantage and power transmission.

The book approaches its subject by first laying a foundation of relevant mechanical concepts before progressing chronologically and thematically. Beginning with early planting technologies, the book transitions to reaping and harvesting machines, then delves into the intricacies of threshing and winnowing devices.

The book examines these devices' impact on medieval agrarian economies and their legacy in subsequent agricultural innovations. By drawing from illuminated manuscripts, agricultural treatises, and archaeological findings, the book offers a unique perspective on medieval agricultural technology, highlighting its mechanical aspects and practical applications.

“Tells the story of anger, disillusionment, and determination of Americans to develop a political movement to fight chemical pollution . . . timely.” —The Huffington PostThis book, named one of Booklist’s Top 10 books on sustainability in 2014, is the first to offer a comprehensive examination of the environmental health movement, which unlike many parts of the environmental movement, focuses on ways toxic chemicals and other hazardous agents in the environment effect human health and well-being. Born in 1978 when Lois Gibbs organized her neighbors to protest the health effects of a toxic waste dump in Love Canal, New York, the movement has spread across the United States and throughout the world. By placing human health at the center of its environmental argument, this movement has achieved many victories in community mobilization and legislative reform. In The Rise of the U.S. Environmental Health Movement, environmental health expert Kate Davies describes the movement’s historical, ideological, and cultural roots and analyzes its strategies and successes.“Kate Davies’ excellent book focuses on the role of health in the environmental health movement and encourages us to consider its origins and accomplishments . . . The Rise of the U.S. Environmental Health Movement looks both back and forward to challenge us to consider our current direction. In the future this book will provide readers with an important perspective on how the environmental health movement shaped our society.” —Toxipedia“A well-done history of America’s environmental health movement . . . offers readers valuable information on how grassroots organizing prevents harm from toxic exposures and leads to safe and healthy communities.” —Lois Marie Gibbs, Executive Director, Center for Health, Environment & Justice

Classical mechanics is the foundation of physics, describing the motion of objects under the influence of forces. It is based on Newtonian principles and provides the groundwork for various fields such as engineering, astronomy, and applied sciences. This chapter introduces the fundamental concepts, historical context, and different approaches to classical mechanics.
Classical mechanics originated with the pioneering work of Galileo Galilei and Sir Isaac Newton. Galileo’s studies of motion laid the foundation for Newton’s laws, which were later formalized in Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687). These laws revolutionized the understanding of motion and force, enabling precise predictions of mechanical systems. Before Newton, the Aristotelian view dominated, which incorrectly stated that objects require a continuous force to remain in motion. Newton’s insights replaced this with the concept of inertia, fundamentally changing physics.
At its core, classical mechanics describes the relationship between forces, motion, and energy. It assumes that time and space are absolute and independent entities. Unlike quantum mechanics and relativity, which describe extreme conditions, classical mechanics applies to everyday objects moving at speeds much lower than the speed of light. The field is traditionally divided into several branches, including kinematics, which studies motion without considering forces, and dynamics, which examines forces and their effects.

What if running in beautiful places was paradoxically contributing to the destruction of those precious environments and causing irreversible global harm to people and animals too?

In We Can’t Run Away From This, ultrarunner Damian Hall examines the impact of running in our climate and ecological emergency. Packed with insights from experts, it is an enlightening read which will prompt us all to really think about our kit, food and travel, and to identify simple changes we can make to our running and wider lives. But Damian also asks if concentrating on our individual footprints (pun unintended) is really the answer.

We can’t run away from this any more, and this book will give every runner ideas about how to live and exercise more sustainably.

Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to substances that are typically harmless to most people. These substances, known as allergens, can include food, pollen, dust, pet dander, insect venom, and certain medications. When an allergic individual comes into contact with an allergen, their immune system mistakenly identifies it as a threat and triggers a defensive response. This response can range from mild symptoms, such as sneezing or a skin rash, to severe and potentially life-threatening reactions like anaphylaxis.
The immune system plays a central role in allergic reactions. Normally, it defends the body against harmful pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. However, in individuals with allergies, the immune system misidentifies allergens as dangerous invaders. The primary component involved in allergic reactions is Immunoglobulin E (IgE), a type of antibody that binds to specific allergens. This binding signals immune cells, such as mast cells and basophils, to release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals, leading to symptoms like swelling, redness, itching, and respiratory distress.
Allergic reactions are classified into different types based on the mechanism and timing of the immune response. Immediate hypersensitivity reactions occur within minutes of allergen exposure and are mediated by IgE. These reactions include hay fever, asthma attacks, and food allergies. Delayed hypersensitivity reactions, on the other hand, take several hours or even days to develop and involve different immune pathways, such as T-cell activation. Contact dermatitis, a reaction to certain chemicals or metals, is an example of a delayed allergic response.
