Sinossi

Ice Road Cracks delves into the precarious world of frozen transportation routes, examining the mechanical and geographical factors that determine ice road stability in cold regions. These roads, crucial for accessing remote areas and supporting supply chain management, face inherent weaknesses due to the nature of ice and snow.

The book uniquely integrates mechanical engineering principles with earth sciences geography, offering an interdisciplinary approach to understand and mitigate risks associated with this vital arctic infrastructure. The book highlights how factors like ice thickness and thermal regimes directly impact ice road integrity. Intriguingly, the construction and maintenance of these routes have become increasingly significant with economic globalization pushing further into northern territories.

The book systematically progresses across chapters, starting with the fundamental mechanical properties of ice, then exploring geographical elements, and finally assessing various engineering methods for ensuring safer and more reliable ice road systems. By combining field data, laboratory experiments, and computational modeling, Ice Road Cracks offers practical insights for engineers, geoscientists, and policymakers. The book’s approach allows for a more holistic assessment of risk factors and enables informed decision-making in real-time, especially considering environmental concerns like permafrost thaw.

In emergency medicine, the first moments of patient care are crucial. A structured approach to initial assessment and triage ensures that life-threatening conditions are identified and managed promptly. The goal is to stabilize the patient while prioritizing those who need immediate intervention.
The Primary Survey follows the ABCDE approach—Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, and Exposure. This systematic evaluation helps in quickly identifying life-threatening issues. Airway assessment focuses on patency, identifying obstructions, and securing the airway if necessary. Breathing evaluation includes checking for respiratory distress, auscultating lung sounds, and providing oxygen or ventilation support. Circulation assessment involves monitoring pulse, blood pressure, and perfusion, with immediate fluid resuscitation or hemorrhage control as needed. Disability evaluation considers neurological status, including Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scoring. Exposure involves a full-body examination to detect hidden injuries while maintaining temperature regulation.
Once the primary survey stabilizes immediate threats, the Secondary Survey provides a more comprehensive assessment. This includes a detailed history using the AMPLE mnemonic—Allergies, Medications, Past medical history, Last meal, and Events leading to the illness or injury. A thorough head-to-toe physical examination follows, including imaging and laboratory investigations if needed. The secondary survey ensures that less obvious but critical injuries or illnesses are not overlooked.

A portrait of India in mid-sentence - caught between tradition and transformation, noise and nuance.

From selfies and what they mean to the travails of modern love and the new vocabulary of politics, Santosh Desai returns to chronicle the invisible revolutions of Indian life with his signature wit and insight. In Memes for Mummyji, he explores how the mobile phone - now as common as the pressure cooker - has quietly reshaped everything: how we shop, flirt, pray, protest, and parent.
This is not a book about technology. It's about us. Our habits, our contradictions, our new-found freedoms - and the deep cultural software that still runs underneath. Warm, keenly perceptive and deeply human, this book, with essays drawn from over a decade of observation, is a love letter to the everyday theatre of Indian life in the digital age.

The Collected Writings of Edward Leedskalnin is a compilation of two of Leedskalnin's works, Magnetic Current and A Book in Every Home. This eccentric sculptor and amateur scientist devoted most of his life to creating a large complex of megalithic stones that he quarried and carved himself. Edward Leedskalnin was born in Latvia in 1887. Although he only received formal education up to the fourth grade, he was very inquisitive and spent a large part of his youth reading. He was said to be a sickly boy and grew into a small man-reportedly measuring just 5 feet tall and weighing 100 lbs. At age 26, he was engaged to marry a 16-year-old girl named Agnes Skuvst, but the wedding was called off. Accounts differ, some claiming the wedding was canceled the day before it was scheduled and others saying that Leedskalnin was jilted at the altar. Regardless, he was heartbroken and shortly after emigrated to America. After reaching New York in 1912, he continued on to Oregon where he worked for an ax-handle manufacturer. By 1923, he had contracted tuberculosis. The illness prompted him to move to a warmer climate for his health. He chose Florida, where he purchased an undeveloped acre of land in Florida City. It was on this modest plot that he began Rock Gate (later renamed Coral Castle). This ambitious project involved extracting enormous pieces of oolite stone from his land, moving them into position, and carving them-entirely alone. The pieces include sculptures and carved stone furniture, as well as a two-story tower that served as his living quarters. The project was devoted to his "Sweet Sixteen," the woman who had rejected him many years earlier.Due to the scale of the project, some have dubbed it "Florida's Stonehenge." While it's unclear how Leedskalnin was able to complete it, it is all the more impressive considering his small stature and questionable health. When he wasn't hewing or carving stone, Leedskalnin was also conducting experiments and writing.

Dare to Care is a book about the magic of medicine and life. Patients long for caring and connection when they are ill, and the doctors who come to this profession full of care and compassion often leave feeling drained and diluted as human beings because they forget who they are. In this book, you will be reminded that essential harmony and well-being is your natural state, and what you have been looking for in any doctor you have sought. It offers an invitation to join a new bandwidth of caring, intuition, holism, and love, to ride the waves of living beyond the norm.

Five stunningly large forests remain on Earth: the Taiga, extending from the Pacific Ocean across all of Russia and far-northern Europe; the North American boreal, ranging from Alaska's Bering seacoast to Canada's Atlantic shore; the Amazon, covering almost the entirety of South America's bulge; the Congo, occupying parts of six nations in Africa's wet equatorial middle; and the island forest of New Guinea, twice the size of California.

These megaforests are vital to preserving global biodiversity, thousands of cultures, and a stable climate, as John W. Reid and Thomas E. Lovejoy argue convincingly in Ever Green. Megaforests serve an essential role in decarbonizing the atmosphere—the boreal alone holds 1.8 trillion metric tons of carbon in its deep soils and peat layers, 190 years' worth of global emissions at 2019 levels—and saving them is the most immediate and affordable large-scale solution to our planet's most formidable ongoing crisis.

Reid and Lovejoy offer practical solutions to address the biggest challenges these forests face, from vastly expanding protected areas, to supporting Indigenous forest stewards, to planning smarter road networks. In gorgeous prose that evokes the majesty of these ancient forests along with the people and animals who inhabit them, Reid and Lovejoy take us on an exhilarating global journey.

This beloved bestseller-over 180,000 copies sold-has helped caregivers worldwide keep themselves emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, and physically healthy in the face of the sometimes overwhelming traumas they confront every day.

A longtime trauma worker, Laura van Dernoot Lipsky offers a deep and empathetic survey of the often-unrecognized toll taken on those working to make the world a better place. We may feel tired, cynical, or numb or like we can never do enough. These, and other symptoms, affect us individually and collectively, sapping the energy and effectiveness we so desperately need if we are to benefit humankind, other living things, and the planet itself.

In Trauma Stewardship, we are called to meet these challenges in an intentional way. Lipsky offers a variety of simple and profound practices, drawn from modern psychology and a range of spiritual traditions, that enable us to look carefully at our reactions and motivations and discover new sources of energy and renewal. She includes interviews with successful trauma stewards from different walks of life and even uses New Yorker cartoons to illustrate her points.

"We can do meaningful work in a way that works for us and for those we serve," Lipsky writes. "Taking care of ourselves while taking care of others allows us to contribute to our societies with such impact that we will leave a legacy informed by our deepest wisdom and greatest gifts instead of burdened by our struggles and despair."
