Little information survives on Catherine’s life.
She was born Amy Catherine Robbins in 1872.
In about 1892 she was a student in a biology cramming class where the teacher was H G Wells. Though married he was quickly attracted to his student and within a short time they were living together in Woking, Surrey. He then divorced his first wife and married Catherine in October 1895 at St Pancras register office.
In the early years they were poor to the point that they could not afford to start a family. When they did they had two children; Philip in 1901 and Frank two years later.
For much of her life she seemed to pursue other interests, being a mother, a gardener, running much of her husband’s business affairs and this seemed to leave little time for her own literary pursuits. She published little during her lifetime apart from a few poems and some short stories. Indeed her prodigiously talented husband even referred to her as ‘Jane’ and soon all around her did too, her writing life seemingly in another personality far, far away.
By the mid 20’s she was ill with cancer and succumbed to its advance in 1927.
Wells, although wayward and promiscuous during much of the marriage, now attempted to put his wife’s literary merits into book form and published ‘The Book of Catherine Wells’, a collection of short stories and poems.

A classic spy thriller that takes readers on an exhilarating journey along the treacherous North Sea coast of Germany. The story unfolds through the eyes of Carruthers, a young British yachtsman who embarks on a seemingly innocent sailing trip with his friend Davies. However, they soon uncover a sinister plot involving secret naval preparations that could jeopardize British national security. As they navigate foggy waters, shifting tides, and suspicious locals, Carruthers and Davies race against time to unravel the riddle and save their country. Erskine Childers' gripping narrative skillfully combines elements of espionage, adventure, and nautical expertise, making it a pioneer in the genre of spy fiction.

Erskine Childers was an Irish author, diplomat, and Irish nationalist. Best known for his espionage thriller "The Riddle of the Sands," published in 1903, he gained recognition for his insightful portrayals of political tensions and espionage. Beyond his literary pursuits, Childers played an active role in Irish politics, advocating for Irish independence and serving as a key negotiator during the Irish Treaty negotiations in 1921

Edgar Wallace was one of the most prolific British authors of the 20th Century and yet his work is now little known, apart from perhaps his work on the story of King Kong in 1933.
“The Ringer” is a wonderful example of his work. Set in a 1920s London where the fog cloaked streets echo to the rumours that a ruthless and fiendishly clever assassin has returned to reek vengeance on his enemies. He is a man who takes on ever changing personas, so much so that some suspect he may even infiltrate the law itself!
Head Stories Audio presents Simon Hester’s stylish narration of this classic murder mystery. With original music.
