Beschreibung

Volcanic Agriculture explores the surprising link between volcanic activity and fertile farmlands, revealing how nutrient-rich volcanic soil can support sustainable farming. This book examines how the weathering of volcanic rock creates unique soil compositions, impacting water retention and overall soil fertility. It highlights how understanding these geological processes is key to unlocking the agricultural potential of volcanic regions, contributing to global food security and environmental conservation.

The book showcases diverse farming techniques developed across volcanic landscapes worldwide, from ancient civilizations to modern communities. Case studies illustrate crop diversification, water management, and soil conservation strategies. By integrating geological, agricultural, and social perspectives, Volcanic Agriculture provides practical recommendations for policymakers, farmers, and researchers.

The initial chapters detail the origins and characteristics of volcanic soils, followed by case studies and an assessment of long-term sustainability.

From bestselling author, long-time former National Geographic Explorer, and anthropologist Wade Davis comes the story of America's Nile: how it once flowed freely and how human intervention has left it near exhaustion, altering the water temperature, volume, local species, and shoreline of the river Theodore Roosevelt once urged us to "leave it as it is."

Plugged by no fewer than twenty-five dams, the Colorado is the world's most regulated river drainage, providing most of the water supply of Las Vegas, Tucson, and San Diego, and much of the power and water of Los Angeles and Phoenix, cities that are home to more than 25 million people. For the entire American Southwest, the Colorado is indeed the river of life, which makes it all the more tragic and ironic that by the time it approaches its final destination, it has been reduced to a shadow upon the sand, its delta dry and deserted, its flow a toxic trickle seeping into the sea.

Yet despite more than a century of human interference, Davis writes, the splendor of the Colorado lives on in the river's remaining wild rapids, quiet pools, and sweeping canyons. The story of the Colorado River is the human quest for progress and its inevitable effects—and an opportunity to learn from past mistakes and foster the rebirth of America's most iconic waterway.

After a decade of guiding people who've just added a puppy to the family, dog trainer Kathy Callahan has learned a fundamental truth: at some point every one of them feels overwhelmed. When they seek out expertise, they're flooded with impossibly detailed advice, conflicting opinions, and a surprising number of techniques that seem unkind.

In contrast, Callahan reassures owners that success flows not from nailing an intimidating list of disciplinary tactics, but from adopting a mindset of "trusted guide" rather than "master." The key to great training is recognizing that we have essentially kidnapped these puppies from their own vastly different culture. Using an easy-to-grasp "Planet Dog/Planet Human" concept, Callahan dives into the essentials, including how to prepare your house (and yourself) for puppyhood; potty training, chewing, jumping, and other challenges; how to train with fun, not fear; navigating puppyhood with young kids, cats, and/or other dogs; and what to do if there's household disagreement on things like whether dogs belong on furniture.

In engaging chapters filled with empathy for both the beleaguered humans and their confused puppies, Welcoming Your Puppy from Planet Dog paves the way for a rewarding friendship between a relaxed, well-prepared human and a canine family member who's happily at ease in our world.

Located in a part of Cumbria that was once part of Lancashire, the River Duddon rises in the high fells of the Lake District and flows for 25 miles through varied scenery before disappearing into the sands between Millom and Barrow-in-Furness. Wordsworth’s series of sonnets, inspired by his walks along the river, were written over a period of years, but are arranged so as to follow its downward course from the fells to the sea. Part One of this reading consists of the 33 sonnets and postscript that were first published as a series in 1820. Later editions of Wordsworth’s works included a 34th sonnet, which is appended to Part One. Part Two contains Wordsworth’s rather eccentric notes on the sonnets, which are largely taken up by an account of the remarkable career of the Reverend ‘Wonderful’ Walker, who lived to the age of 94 after serving as curate of Seathwaite chapel for 67 years from 1735 to 1802. I have read the sonnets using a northern English accent as I believe Wordsworth may have read them himself. (Summary by Phil Benson)

East by West: a Journey in the Recess is an account of British journalist Henry Lucy's travels across America and on to the Far East during the parliamentary recess in 1883. Lucy was one of the most influential journalists of his day and, as "Toby M.P.", a noted humorist in Punch magazine. His acute powers of observation and light touch make this a most engaging book. It is a fascinating insight into the Englishman's travels abroad within two decades of the American Civil War and the end of Japanese isolationism. This is the first of two volumes covering his journey with his wife. This first volume includes his travels in America and in Japan, including the Atlantic and Pacific crossings by steamer. Volume II, which is also available here as an audio recording, continues his experiences in Japan and India, returning home via Aden and the Suez Canal. (Introduction by Ruth Golding)
