Sinossi

Immanuel Kant's "Critique of Practical Reason" serves as a foundational text in moral philosophy, elucidating his pivotal concepts of duty, moral law, and autonomy. Written in a rigorous and systematic style, this work extends the exploration initiated in his earlier "Critique of Pure Reason," bridging theoretical understanding with practical application. Kant articulates the necessity of a universal moral law grounded in reason, arguing for a categorical imperative that compels individuals to act according to maxims that could be legislated as universal law. Through meticulous analysis and dense argumentation, Kant's literary form reflects Enlightenment ideals, fostering a discourse that elevates rationality as the essence of ethical principles. Immanuel Kant, a luminary of the Enlightenment, constructed his moral philosophy during a period rife with metaphysical speculation and burgeoning empirical science. His academic journey at the University of Königsberg was marked by intellectual rigor and an unwavering commitment to reason, which propelled him to question the nature of human freedom and moral accountability. The "Critique of Practical Reason" not only builds upon his critical philosophy but also resonates with his life experiences in a rapidly changing world, where the quest for moral certainty became increasingly vital. I highly recommend "Critique of Practical Reason" to readers seeking a profound engagement with ethical reasoning and the role of human agency. Kant's work challenges us to reconsider our moral responsibilities within the frameworks of rationality and autonomy, making it essential for students of philosophy and anyone invested in understanding the principles underpinning human behavior. His arguments continue to influence contemporary debates in ethics, reinforcing the timelessness of his insights and their applicability to modern moral dilemmas.

Ever since the end of the Black Death in 1350 the human population has been growing continuously at an alarming rate and there is no sign of it stopping anytime soon.

The biggest increase has been in most recent times. From the 1950's onward and due largely to medical advancement and the increase in agricultural productivity, the rate of increase has been significant. This in itself should tell us something. That this is a modern problem created recently and we have no precedent, no history to work upon. We don't know exactly what is going to happen. We don't know if a super virus will come along again as it did in 1918 and kill millions of people. We don't know if we will eat ourselves into mass extinction. We don't know if the destruction of natural species such as bees will seal our fate. We don't know if an asteroid will wipe us out or even artificial intelligence. We do know that overpopulation, no matter which way you look at it, is not good. We do know that we are running out of fossil fuels, food supplies, methods of producing more and more power and space.

What does the future hold for a planet that is swarming in two-legged locusts hell bent on devouring every possible resource the Earth has to offer?

When The Case for Animal Rights was published in 1983 it rapidly became an acknowledged classic of moral philosophy, and its author, Tom Regan (1938–2017), was recognized as an intellectual leader within the animal rights movement. Twenty years later, Case was reissued with a new and fully considered preface, in which Regan responded to his critics and defended the book's revolutionary position. Now, forty years after its original publication, this foundational text is available as an audiobook. In addition to the complete text of the revised 2002 edition, the audiobook includes a recording made by Tom Regan in 2001, in which he reflects on why he wrote The Case for Animal Rights, how it compares with Peter Singer's Animal Liberation, and how his thinking evolved as he was writing the book. The audiobook also features an essay by philosopher Gary Comstock on Tom Regan's contribution to, and place within, the history of thinking about our obligations to nonhuman animals over the last half-century.
The audiobook of The Case for Animal Rights is a production of the Culture & Animals Foundation, a nonprofit co-founded by Tom Regan in 1985. Both the book and the e-book of Case are available from the University of California Press.
"Unquestionably the best work yet to appear in its field, surpassing even Peter Singer's famous Animal Liberation in originality, thoroughness, and rigor."—Choice
"The Case for Animal Rights is beyond question the most important philosophical contribution to animal rights and is a major work in moral philosophy."—Animal Law Review

In an awesome meeting of minds, cultural theorists Stuart Hall and bell hooks met for a series of wide-ranging conversations on what Hall sums up as "life, love, death, sex." From the trivial to the profound, across boundaries of age, sexualities and genders, hooks and Hall dissect topics and themes of continual contemporary relevance, including feminism, home and homecoming, class, black masculinity, family, politics, relationships, and teaching. In their fluid and honest dialogue they push and pull each other as well as the listener, and the result is a book that speaks to the power of conversation as a place of critical pedagogy.
