Sinossi

In "Umboo, the Elephant," Howard Roger Garis crafts a delightful tale that vividly brings to life the adventures of a young elephant named Umboo living in the vibrant, sprawling landscape of a fictional jungle. Garis employs a charming narrative style rich in descriptive language and whimsical dialogue, immersing readers into Umboo's world of wonder and mischief. The book aligns with early 20th-century children'Äôs literature, mirroring the fascination with anthropomorphic animals and exotic settings prevalent during the time, often blending moral lessons with enchanting storylines. Howard Roger Garis was an American author and journalist known for his contributions to children's literature, particularly during the early 1900s. His background in creating engaging stories for youthful audiences, along with his keen interest in natural history, shaped his writing style and thematic choices. Garis's experiences observing wildlife and his commitment to evoking a sense of curiosity in young readers are evident throughout the narrative, making it both accessible and endearing. "Umboo, the Elephant" is highly recommended for both children and adults seeking a nostalgic escape into a world where animals speak and adventure awaits at every turn. Garis's enchanting prose not only entertains but also subtly instills empathy and understanding of the natural world, making it an essential read for nurturing imagination and compassion.

The Repairman by Harry Harrison - Being an interstellar trouble shooter wouldn’t be so bad … if I could shoot the trouble!
The Old Man had that look of intense glee on his face that meant someone was in for a very rough time. Since we were alone, it took no great feat of intelligence to figure it would be me. I talked first, bold attack being the best defense and so forth.
“I quit. Don’t bother telling me what dirty job you have cooked up, because I have already quit and you do not want to reveal company secrets to me.”
The grin was even wider now and he actually chortled as he thumbed a button on his console. A thick legal document slid out of the delivery slot onto his desk.
“This is your contract,” he said. “It tells how and when you will work. A steel-and-vanadium-bound contract that you couldn’t crack with a molecular disruptor.”
I leaned out quickly, grabbed it and threw it into the air with a single motion. Before it could fall, I had my Solar out and, with a wide-angle shot, burned the contract to ashes.
The Old Man pressed the button again and another contract slid out on his desk. If possible, the smile was still wider now.
“I should have said a duplicate of your contract—like this one here.” He made a quick note on his secretary plate. “I have deducted 13 credits from your salary for the cost of the duplicate—as well as a 100-credit fine for firing a Solar inside a building.”
I slumped, defeated, waiting for the blow to land. The Old Man fondled my contract.
“According to this document, you can’t quit. Ever. Therefore I have a little job I know you’ll enjoy. Repair job. The Centauri beacon has shut down. It’s a Mark III beacon.…”

    And the Gods Laughed

And the Gods Laughed by Fredric Brown - Hank was spinning quite a space lie—something about earrings wearing their owners. The crew got a boot out of the yarn—until they got to thinking.
You know how it is when you're with a work crew on one of the asteroids. You're there, stuck for the month you signed up for, with four other guys and nothing to do but talk. Space on the little tugs that you go in and return in, and live in while you're there, is at such a premium that there isn't room for a book or a magazine nor equipment for games. And you're out of radio range except for the usual once-a-terrestrial-day, system-wide newscasts.
So talking is the only indoor sport you can go in for. Talking and listening. You've plenty of time for both because a work-day, in space-suits, is only four hours and that with four fifteen-minute back-to-the-ship rest periods, so you actually work only three hours and spend half that time getting in and out the airlock. But those are union rules, and no asteroid mining outfit tries to chisel on them.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that talk is cheap on one of those work crews. With most of the day to do nothing else, you listen to some real whoppers, stories that would make the old-time Liars Clubs back on earth seem like Sunday-school meetings. And if your mind runs that way, you've got plenty of time to think up some yourself.
Charlie Dean was on our crew, and Charlie could tell some dillies. He'd been on Mars back in the old days when there was still trouble with the bolies, and when living on Mars was a lot like living on Earth back in the days of Indian fighting. The bolies thought and fought a lot like Amerinds, even though they were quadrupeds that looked like alligators on stilts—if you can picture an alligator on stilts—and used blow-guns instead of bows and arrows.

Four unlikely companions set out on a journey—and discover that courage, friendship, and a little cleverness can change everything.
When an aging donkey is cast aside by his master, he decides to seek a new life as a musician in the great city. Along the road, he is joined by a weary dog, a clever cat, and a proud rooster—each fleeing a similar fate. Though none are young or strong anymore, together they form an unexpected fellowship bound by hope and determination.
As night falls, their journey leads them to a lonely house in the woods—one occupied by a band of robbers. With nothing but their voices and their wits, the four animals devise a daring plan that turns fear into triumph and danger into opportunity.
The Traveling Musicians, one of the most beloved fairy tales by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, is a timeless story of resilience, loyalty, and finding purpose when the world says you are finished. Warm, humorous, and quietly heroic, this classic tale reminds listeners that even the forgotten can still make themselves heard.
Narrated with warmth and storytelling charm by Richard Stibbard, this production brings new life to a fairy tale that has delighted generations.
