Psychic visions are tricky things—especially from a woman in a coma

I find the murdered woman crumpled under a tree. Blood stains her back and her hands are bound. If I touch her, my psychic abilities will show me what happened to her. But I've lived through murders before, and the visions leave scars. Fighting my fear, I touch her—and only see four names—Addlynn Jeanette Claire Margaret.

The unmistakable cry of a newborn infant shatters the calm of the woods. Her body is wrapped around the tiny boy, impossibly small and fragile. I scoop up the screaming infant, and the woman moves to protect her son. She's alive.

Alive, but in a coma—a complete mystery. The detectives, my brother and his handsome partner, desperately need information. I'm the only one who can communicate with the woman. Touching her hand in the hospital provides only snippets of her life. Terrifying snippets, like how she got the scar burned into the palm of her hand.

Visions are tricky things. The details float like smoke—lost in the haze. I can't tell what she's running from, but the woman's terror burns inside me. I will find out who hurt her, and I won't stop until I bring them to a fiery end.

Sand by Algernon Blackwood is a chilling work of early supernatural fiction that transforms the vast silence of the desert into a living nightmare. When a group of travelers ventures into an isolated, sun-scorched landscape, they begin to sense an unseen presence lurking beneath the endless dunes—something ancient, intelligent, and profoundly hostile to human life. As the desert tightens its grip, ordinary reality erodes, replaced by mounting dread and the terrifying suggestion that the sand itself is watching.
Blending psychological tension with cosmic horror, Blackwood masterfully evokes fear through atmosphere rather than spectacle. The story explores humanity’s insignificance when confronted with primordial forces beyond comprehension, using the desert as both setting and antagonist. Sparse, relentless, and deeply unsettling, Sand stands as a landmark of weird fiction and an essential read for fans of H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, and classic supernatural horror.

Two things are impossible to walk away from: death and vintage clothing. Trust me. I've tried.
Moving across the country and opening a costume shop was supposed to be my chance for a normal life. What I wanted was a fresh start, one where the biggest danger would be a carelessly wielded sewing needle.
What I got was the ghost of a murdered reporter demanding justice, a power I can’t control, and a new goat shifter BFF hell-bent on trouble.
Now, my hunt for the killer threatens to expose a supernatural community determined to safeguard its secrecy at any cost. My only chance to survive is to embrace the legacy I’ve spent my life running from.
Fastening the Grave is the first book in the Kali James series, featuring a reluctant necromancer who finds herself in a world of werewolves, vampires, and ghosts. If you like your urban fantasy with quirky characters, a side of supernatural mystery, and a dose of slow-burn romance, this is the book for you.

Wide Open by Deborah Coates is the first book in a series of "startlingly original" (Booklist) contemporary fantasy novels set against the sweeping prairies and desolate byways of the American Midwest, creating "a rural backwater where the normal and paranormal seamlessly merge." (Publishers Weekly) When Sergeant Hallie Michaels comes back to South Dakota from Afghanistan on ten days' compassionate leave, her sister Dell's ghost is waiting at the airport to greet her. The sheriff says that Dell's death was suicide, but Hallie doesn't believe it. Something happened or Dell's ghost wouldn't still be hanging around. Friends and family, mourning Dell's loss, think Hallie's letting her grief interfere with her judgment. The one person who seems willing to listen is the deputy sheriff, Boyd Davies, who shows up everywhere and helps when he doesn't have to. As Hallie asks more questions, she attracts new ghosts, women who disappeared without a trace. Soon, someone's trying to beat her up, burn down her father's ranch, and stop her investigation. Hallie's going to need Boyd, her friends, and all the ghosts she can find to defeat an enemy who has an unimaginable ancient power at his command. --Wide Open has been nominated for the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a First Novel, appeared on Locus Magazine's Recommended Reading List for first novels, and was chosen as a Tor.com Reviewer's Choice Pick for Favorite Book of the year. The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction claimed that it is "one of the best first novels I've read in a long time" and Library Journal agrees that "fans of urban fantasies should enjoy the kick-ass [heroine]."
