PG Excerpt ~~~~~

Edward always felt strange
when he rang the doorbell to the house that was once his, but he was not about
to the break any rules or put his ex-wife to the test by just walking in or
even showing up unannounced. Immediately after opening the door, Beverly saw
her father standing in the doorway still in his business suit with over-night
baggage. Beverly threw her arms around his neck and in child-like fashion
kissed him on the cheek.

As Beverly and Edward walked
arm in arm toward the living room, he asked, “So what’s up?  It’s Friday night. Don’t you have a date?”

“Not really,” she responded.
“I knew Mom was going away with her jerk of a boyfriend so I thought we could
goof off together.”

“Does that mean I’m your
date?”  he asked.

“I guess you could say that.
We could sit and talk, I’ll fix you dinner, and we could watch TV, or
whatever,” she answered.

“Well, that sounds okay, but
I think your date should take you out on the town. I can dance to the same
music you like and now that you’re twenty-two, I can take you to the night
clubs,” he said with a spark of enthusiasm. Beverly was excited by the offer.

Beverly dressed semi-formal
in a powder-blue, knee-length evening gown and was looking as attractive as a
Cosmopolitan cover girl. Over the past two years of life as a bachelor, Edward
had learned how to show a lady a good time, and that was exactly how he planned
to treat Beverly; like a lady, rather than a daughter.

The evening began with a
candlelight dinner at a high-end restaurant where Edward was well-known as a
good tipper. Beverly was overwhelmed by the attention they received as a couple
by the maître d and the wait staff. She knew the cocktails, the wine and the
meal had to cost a bundle and felt she had to say, “I appreciate all this, Dad,
but I’m just you daughter, not a movie star.”

The concept of death can be viewed from different perspectives. In general terms, it can be defined as the end of life, but a more spiritual interpretation would describe it as the separation of the soul from the body. Regardless of the definition, death implies change and transformation, even if only on a physical level. The idea of transcendence has served as a source of comfort for humanity that is usually represented in the belief of an afterlife which takes place in another realm.
Since the beginning of history, understanding and explaining it has been a large concern for people all over the world. Death is both a daily occurrence and an irreversible condition, and countless efforts have been made to avoid or postpone it. The constant struggle to transcend its permanence has led cultures to create the idea of an afterlife; of a place or world where life carries on after its end on earth. In ancient Mesoamerica, this concept of an afterlife greatly permeated the worldview of the many pre-Hispanic cultures that developed all throughout the region.
Among Mesoamericans, life and death were closely related and often deeply integrated, and the two conditions were perceived to exist in an opposition that was at once dynamic and complementary. Described later by the Aztecs as the state of nepantla, life and death were viewed by the indigenous people of Mesoamerica as yet another example of the “back and forth” fluctuations common to human life.

"Those who wonder how the international community failed so dramatically in Afghanistan need look no further … Losing Afghanistan explores the arguments for and against intervention and highlights the difficulty of establishing unity of purpose and effort in such demanding circumstances. Above all, it poses a question: how can we in the West claim we know so much, yet demonstrate in Afghanistan that we understand so little?" – General (retd) Sir Jack Deverell OBE, former Commander-in-Chief of Allied Forces Northern Europe
"A wonderful book of insightful essays on Afghanistan from an outsider lens." – Ezatullah Adib, head of research at Integrity Watch Afghanistan and national country representative at the World Association for Public Opinion Research
"The strategic question posed by these brilliant essays is: how can the doctrine of liberal intervention be reframed to ensure the West intervenes overseas to manage future humanitarian calamities for reasons beyond just national security?" – Brigadier (retd) Justin Hedges OBE
    ***
When Taliban forces took Kabul on 15 August 2021, it marked the end of the Western intervention that had begun nearly twenty years earlier with the US-led invasion.
The fall of Afghanistan triggered a seismic shock in the West, where US President Joe Biden announced an end to America's involvement in conflicts overseas. In Afghanistan itself it produced terror for the future for those who had worked with and grown up under the coalition-supported administration.
Now, with the country spiralling into economic collapse and famine, Losing Afghanistan is a plea for us to keep our gaze on the plight of the people of Afghanistan and to understand how action and inaction in the West shaped the fate of the nation.
Why was Afghanistan lost? Can it be regained? And what happens next? Edited by international development expert Brian Brivati, this collection of twenty-one essays by analysts, politicians, soldiers, commentators and practitioners – interspersed with powerful eyewitness testimony from Afghan voices – explains what happened in Afghanistan and why, and what the future holds both for its people and for liberal intervention.

The Epistle to the Colossians is the twelfth book of the New Testament. It was written, according to the text, by Paul the Apostle and Timothy, and addressed to the church in Colossae, a small Phrygian city near Laodicea and approximately 100 miles from Ephesus in Asia Minor. Some scholars have increasingly questioned Paul's authorship and attributed the letter to an early follower instead, but others still defend it as authentic. If Paul was the author, he probably used an amanuensis, or secretary, in writing the letter possibly Timothy.
