~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~
When Anthony picked Cora up on Saturday, she was wearing a loose skirt and a blouse, but as he would find out later, underneath her visible attire was a teeny weeny bikini. It was in the boat with the outboard motor that he rented from the park where it would be Cora’s turn to present her surprise to the host. As Anthony was guiding the boat, Cora casually removed her blouse and skirt to display to him the most beautiful body he had ever seen. It was done in a nonchalant fashion without any intention of being a sexually suggestive gesture. They both knew that swimming was going to be one of the activities and that they would be seeing most of each others bodies anyway. Anthony was already in shorts suitable for swimming and only needed to remove his T-shirt.
Cora was not one to enjoy being ogled at, but she felt comfortable as Anthony’s eyes browsed her nearly nude body. She was beginning to like him more than just for the activities he was providing for them to share together. Cora enjoyed his conversation; they continued to talk about anything and everything while cruising on the water. She realized that this young man had so much more significant things to say than any other boy she had ever dated. Cora realized that it was too early to draw a conclusion, especially considering that there was not even a genuine relationship yet, but she could not help but wonder: is this boy my soul mate? Is he the one I’ve been looking for in all those other guys? She dismissed the thought for the moment, but it continued to linger subconsciously. The next thought on her mind as she viewed Anthony in just his swimming shorts was, in addition to being a good talker his body is pretty damn good, too!
After swimming, they settled at an area of the reservoir for some fishing; the catch was modest, but certainly more fun than Cora had ever imagined. She was enjoying every moment of being in the company with Anthony, and his ego was surely stroked when he realized that he was delighting the lovely girl of his dreams, the girl that he was afraid to even speak to only days ago. The scenic drive back to San Jose was just as beautiful as the earlier part of the day had been on this warm May evening. Cora invited Anthony into the house to meet her parents, and they could see from her facials expression and the tone in her voice when making the formal introduction that this was a boy that she considered special. After several minutes of conversation that included asking about their trip to San Luis, Anthony told Cora’s parents that he had freshly caught trout on ice and would like to share it.
Cora accompanied him back to the car to get the trout and asked, “Would you like to come to my bedroom?”
Anthony was surprised by the question and responded with his own question, “Are your parents okay with that?”
“Well, not really, but I can let you in through my bedroom window after midnight,” was her astonishing response. She led him around to the back of the house to show him the window and said, “Knock softly. I’ll be waiting.”
    By the spring of 1943, American military planners had begun to create a plan to dislodge Japan from east and southeast Asia. To do so, parts of the Philippines were considered main strategic points in the potential Allied attack in the Pacific. The end goal of the Allied plan was an invasion of the Japanese home islands, in which heavy aerial bombardment would precede a ground assault. In order for this to occur, Allied forces would have to occupy areas surrounding Japan, with China adding to Luzon (the largest island in the Philippines) and Formosa (a large island off the coast of China) to create a triangle from which they could launch their bombers.
    When Admiral Chester Nimitz was directed to capture an island in the Bonin group, Iwo Jima stood out for its importance in making progress against the mainland, with three airfields that would allow American air forces to attack the Japanese mainland. But the Japanese were also well aware of how important Iwo Jima was, and they fought desperately in bunkers and tunnels that required the Americans to carefully clear them out gradually.
    Near the end of 1944, as Allied forces were pushing across the Pacific and edging ever closer to Japan, plans were drawn up to invade the Ryuku islands, the most prominent of them being Okinawa. Given the horrific nature of the combat, and the fact that it was incessant for several weeks, it’s no surprise that Okinawa had a profound psychological effect on the men who fought, but it also greatly influenced the thinking of military leaders who were planning subsequent campaigns, including a potential invasion of the Japanese mainland. The casualty tolls at Okinawa ultimately helped compel President Truman to use the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in an effort to end the war before having to attempt such an invasion.
    Indian Creek Massacre and Captivity of Hall Girls was written by Charles Martin Scanlan in 1915. The Indian Creek Massacre arose in 1832 at LaSalle County, Illinois, after a dispute about a settler-constructed dam that blocked fish from reaching a Native American village downstream. It’s a unique historical snapshot of early America centered around Sylvia and Rachel Hall, sisters who were the only survivors of the massacre and were abducted, as well as the story of Chief Shabona who was a member of the Ottowa and Potawatomi.
    This audiobook is narrated by Sylvia’s great-great-great-granddaughter, Rebecca Cook, with help from her sister Gwendelyn Gilchrist. The written book itself is in public domain and can be downloaded with photos for free from Project Gutenberg at gutenberg.com.
    It is unclear if U.S. policy makers and military leaders fully realize that we have already been thrust into an artificial intelligence race with authoritarian powers. The United States' peer adversaries—China and Russia—have made clear their intentions to make major investments in AI and insert this technology into their military systems, sensors, and weapons. Algorithms of Armageddon examines this most pressing security issue in a clear, insightful delivery by two experts.
    The authors cover in depth debates surrounding the AI "genie out of the bottle" controversy, AI arms races, and the resulting impact on policy and the laws of war. Given that global powers are leading large-scale development of AI, it is likely that use of this technology will be global in extent. Will AI-enabled military weapons systems lead to full-scale global war? The later chapters of the work explore these questions, point to the possibility of humans failing to control military AI applications, and conclude that the dangers for the United States are real.
    Neither a protest against AI, nor a speculative work on how AI could replace humans, Algorithms of Armageddon provides a time-critical understanding of why AI is being implemented through state weaponization, the realities for the global power balance, and more importantly, U.S. national security.
    Light in Bandaged Places shows us the harm done when an older man in a position of power convinces a child that sex with him is alright because he loves her. This poignant story takes us through the long-term wounding of such abuse, and the multifaceted path of healing.
    As a lonely girl coming of age in the 1970s, Liz has every reason to believe her 8th-grade teacher is in love with her.     A raw, often wry, memoir of mothers, mysteries, and miracles.
    Surrendered at birth in a closed adoption, Candi Byrne's biology and ethnicity are a secret. The impending arrival of her first grandchild ignites an urgency to identify potential genetic time bombs and confirm her ancestry. Due to arcane privacy laws, Candi is repeatedly denied access to the one person who could provide that information--her biological mother.
    After years of failed attempts, she resigns herself to never learning the truth about her roots; that is, until her ninety-year-old Aunt Delores has a vision and insists Candi resume efforts to find her birth family. Candi is gobsmacked when an internet search she's performed thousands of times before suddenly reveals her birth mother's identity. Within hours, she ends up on the doorstep of her birth mother--a place she's sworn never to visit.
    After a series of guilt-driven interactions with "Those People," as she refers to her maternal birth family, Candi terminates contact. Although the reunion proves disastrous, it opens her eyes to truths about her relationship with her adoptive mother, Delphine. Though their relationship was difficult and contentious during Delphine's life, a series of miraculous experiences after her death guides Candi home to herself--where, she learns, she has belonged all along.
