His New MittensAn interesting story about how a boy goes to school with new mittens his mother wants him to protect. To do so, he cannot join in a snowball fight with his friends with parents less scrupulous about clothing and the like. The boy ultimately gives in, gets in trouble with his mother, is made to eat alone, attempts to run away, but only makes it to their cold shed. He then gathers his forces to leave for California - wherever that might be. He gets to the street, trudges up in one direction, and see the butcher's shop. Here is a Winesburg, Ohio, moment: when the boy enters the store, he is lucky that the store owner, having been a boy himself, sees something is wrong. He listens to young Horace and takes him back home, where all is forgiven since losing the son was far worse than the mitten issue. In thanks, and significant for the times, the mother calls the shopkeeper by his last name, and says, "Won't you have a glass of our root beer, Mr. Stickney? We make it ourselves." Their form of champagne is shared; the neighbor feeling has worked; the world, or at least that little piece of it, is back on course. Especially appealing to those who liked O. Henry's "The Ransom of Red Chief".

"A Passage to India" is a novel written by E.M. Forster and published in 1924. It explores the complexities of human relationships and the clash of cultures during the British Raj in India. The novel revolves around the experiences of various characters, both British and Indian, in the fictional city of Chandrapore. The main plot follows Dr. Aziz, a young Indian Muslim physician, and his interactions with a British schoolteacher named Adela Quested.

One of the most significant events in the book is the alleged assault of Adela in the Marabar Caves during a trip with Aziz. This incident sparks controversy and leads to a highly publicized trial, which highlights the tensions and prejudices between the British colonizers and the Indian population.

Throughout the novel, Forster delves into themes such as racism, cultural misunderstandings, imperialism, and the struggle for personal and cultural identity. He explores the power dynamics between the British and Indians, examining the impact of colonization on both the colonizers and the colonized.

"A Passage to India" is known for its nuanced portrayal of characters and its exploration of human connection and empathy complexities. Forster raises questions about the limitations of understanding different cultures and the difficulty of bridging the gap between them.

The novel ends on a note of ambiguity, emphasizing the challenges of genuine communication and the lasting effects of colonization. It remains a significant work of literature that continues to be studied and analyzed for its social and political commentary.

The basis for the Oscar–winning buddy film. “There is no questioning the rampant power achieved through shriveling, shattering scenes” (Kirkus Reviews).  Midnight Cowboy is considered by many to be one of the best American novels published since World War II. The main story centers around Joe Buck, a naive but eager and ambitious young Texan, who decides to leave his dead-end job in search of a grand and glamorous life he believes he will find in New York City. But the city turns out to be a much more difficult place to negotiate than Joe could ever have imagined. He soon finds himself and his dreams compromised. Buck’s fall from innocence and his relationship with the crippled street hustler Ratso Rizzo form the novel’s emotional nucleus. This unlikely pairing of Ratso and Joe Buck is perhaps one of the most complex portraits of friendship in contemporary literature.   The focus on male friendship follows a strong path cut by Twain’s Huck and Jim, Melville’s Ishmael and Queequeg, Fitzgerald’s Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby, and Kerouac’s Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty. Midnight Cowboy takes a well-deserved place among a group of distinguished American novels that write—often with unnerving candor—about those who live on the fringe of society.   “Leaves the world of innocence that is muddied by sex for a world that is innocent in the midst of sex, with a protagonist who is a sexual entrepreneur.” —The New York Review of Books

Titled after the name of the farmhouse where most of the story unfolds, Wuthering Heights is an acclaimed novel about jealousy and revenge. The book is hailed as a classic in English literature and has been praised for challenging the old Victorian values of that time. Highly controversial then, Emily Bronte's only novel is widely considered by many as the best of the Bronte sisters' works.
