  Leslie Harrison Lambert was born on 11th November 1883 in Nottingham.  
  After attending Rugby School he trained to be a surveyor. One of his passions was magic and such was his prowess that he joined The Magic Circle, and performed at society events. 
  By the beginning of World War I he was an amateur radio ham and volunteered to work at a coastguard station in Norfolk to intercept German radio transmissions. By November 1914 he was with the Admiralty at Naval Intelligence Room 40.  By 1919 this had become part of the new Government Code and Cypher School.  He was still there as World War II erupted across Europe and with many of his colleagues he transferred to Bletchley Park.  There, in Hut 8, he was quoted as saying that "in contrast to his outrageously unconventional stories" that he led his life on "a monotonously regular timetable". 
  Life outside the Intelligence services was very different.  He married but the couple had no children.  They lived at Holland Park with a second home at Potter Heigham for sailing on the Norfolk Broads.  Other interests were as an amateur radio operator, using the call sign G2ST, and an authority on food and wine. 
  He contacted the BBC to suggest he might tell one of his own short stories on the radio.  Thus was born A J Alan, and his broadcast of ‘My Adventure in Jermyn Street’, on New Year’s Eve, 1924.  It was an immediate success and although he only broadcast a handful of times a year he was one of the most popular radio personalities of the time.  He spent weeks working on each short story, honing his conversational style, making his stories seem like anecdotes that had peculiarly happened to him.  
  A live broadcast was, in fact, a performance.  He used cards to avoid any rustling noises and kept a candle lit in case the lights failed.  His attire was a dinner jacket with eye glass, and a slim black briefcase.  
  Many of his stories were subsequently printed in newspapers and magazines. 
  By 1937 his health had deteriorated and he reduced his radio work making his last broadcast on 21st March 1940.  
  A J Alan died on 13th December 1941.

  Katherine Helen Maud Marshall was born on the 9th September 1867 in Murree, then part of British India, but now Pakistan. 
  For much of her early years she was raised in India and Sri Lanka but returned to England to receive her education. 
  Around 1896 she married Thomas Diver, an officer in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment.  Some years later they returned to England to settle and raise their son. 
  In 1907 her first novel, Captain Desmond VC., was published.  This and later works were commercially successful.  She specialised in the popular genre of imperial romance and whilst they depicted how the English should behave in India, they also included, somewhat daringly for their time, accounts of mixed marriages.  She was a literary contemporary of Kipling’s and great friends with his sister.    
  During Diver’s literary career she wrote novels, short stories, biographies, histories and journalistic items on Indian topics and the English in India.  She faded into obscurity after her death. 
  Her philosophy can best be summed up with her words:― 
  ‘’East and West are not antagonistic, but complementary: heart and head, thought and action, woman and man. Between all these 'pairs of opposites' fusion is rare, difficult, yet eminently possible. Why not, then, between East and West?’’ 
  Maud Diver died on the 14th October 1945.  She was 78.

  Jerome Klapka Jerome was born on the 2nd May 1859 at Belsize House in Caldmore, Walsall, England. 
  His family were reduced to poverty whilst he was a toddler owning to failed investments in the local mining industry. 
  After several moves in declining circumstances Jerome became a pupil at St Marylebone Grammar School.  His aim then was to go into politics, or even become a man of letters, but with the death of his father, when he was thirteen, and his mother two years later, now meant that he had to support himself and leave all thoughts of education behind. 
  He spent four years working for the London and North Western Railway, initially collecting coal that fell along the railway lines.  Thereafter, using the name Harold Crichton, he tried his hand at acting but the repertory company he joined was stretched in its resources and, at times, relied on the actors to purchase their own props and costumes.  After three years he tried journalism, teaching and work as a solicitor’s clerk.  All came to nothing.  Finally, in 1885, he had some success with ‘On the Stage―and Off’, a comic memoir collection of his stage experiences and his early attempts at acting.  
  Shortly thereafter he married and his honeymoon on the Thames became the inspiration for ‘Three Men in a Boat’.  This of course was a wild success, both critically and commercially, but also his creative high point.  
  Although he was now able to write full time, he was never able to attain all the heights of that classic humorous novel.  He remained a prolific writer of novels, plays and short stories and its from those classic works that these stories have been mined. 
  Jerome K Jerome died in Northampton General Hospital on the 14th June 1927 two weeks after suffering a paralytic stroke and a cerebral haemorrhage on a motoring tour.  He was 68.
