The mythology of the Celts is a vast and complex tapestry woven with gods, goddesses, spirits, and mystical forces that shaped their understanding of the universe. Unlike the structured pantheons of Greek or Roman mythology, Celtic deities were deeply intertwined with nature, the cycles of life, and the mysterious Otherworld. Their gods and goddesses were not merely distant figures residing in the heavens but active participants in the world of mortals, influencing the landscape, the seasons, and even the fate of individuals.

At the heart of Celtic belief was an intimate connection with the land. The Celts saw sacredness in rivers, mountains, forests, and the sky, often linking divine beings to specific places. Many gods and goddesses had direct associations with natural elements—Brigid with sacred wells and fire, Manannán mac Lir with the sea, and Cernunnos with the wild and untamed forests. This reverence for nature shaped their spiritual practices, with offerings made at holy sites and rituals performed to honor the divine forces that governed their world.

Another key aspect of Celtic spirituality was the concept of the Otherworld. This was not a place of punishment or reward but a mystical realm existing parallel to the human world. It was the dwelling place of powerful deities, spirits, and the souls of the departed. The Otherworld was often accessible through sacred sites, burial mounds, or moments of deep ritual significance. Many myths tell of heroes or mortals who ventured into this hidden realm, encountering gods, gaining wisdom, or even securing supernatural gifts.

In Christ and Conquest, Old Testament scholar George M. Schwab explores the meaning of the biblical book of Joshua and how it connects to the Gospels’ portrayal of Christ and to Christians today. For each section of the book of Joshua, the author asks: What would the described events have meant in the time of Joshua? What was the historical situation? How does each section warn, encourage, exhort, and teach? What would the book have meant to the Israelites during the time of the exile? The book also discusses such questions as: How does this text advance the gospel of Jesus Christ? How is it fulfilled in him? How does it anticipate his work? How does the book of Joshua lead the reader to draw closer to Jesus, and serve him with more knowledge and fidelity? What does it say to the church today? How does it yearn for the end of all things? How does it offer hope?Written in a conversational and even sometimes humorous manner, Christ and Conquest brings a fresh Christian perspective to the book of Joshua.Accessible biblical-theological presentation that interacts with the Hebrew textAnalysis enables non-Hebrew readers to understand and use Hebrew wordsDelves with some depth into critical issuesAn honest, authentic, and devotional read of Joshua accessible to lay Christians

Perhaps no other single day in United States history was as threatening to the survival of the nation as August 24, 1814, when British forces captured Washington, DC. This unique moment might have significantly altered the nation's path forward, but the event and the reasons why it happened are little remembered by most Americans.

When Washington Burned narrates and examines the British campaign and American missteps that led to the fall of Washington during the War of 1812. Watson analyzes the actions of key figures on both sides, such as President James Madison and General William Winder on the United States side and Rear Admiral George Cockburn and Major General Robert Ross on the British side. He pinpoints the reasons the campaign was such a disaster for the United States but also tells the redeeming stories of the courageous young clerks and the bold first lady, Dolley Madison, who risked their lives to save priceless artifacts and documents from the flames, including the Constitution. The British invasion was repulsed over the coming weeks and months, and the United States ultimately emerged stronger.

General listeners interested in the history of Washington, United States history, and military history will be fascinated by this book.
