🐑 Fiber artist and festival organizer Fleece Goodfellow is running the annual Mountain Fiber Festival when the event's headline fleece judge—a notoriously harsh critic with a sharp eye for flaws—is found dead in the fleece competition tent, buried under a pile of premium fleeces with shearing marks that don't match any local shearer's technique. The police suspect a tragic accident, but Fleece notices the fleeces have been deliberately contaminated and the victim's scoring sheets contain coded comments about fleece fraud. With the festival in chaos and the fiber community unraveling, Fleece must card through the evidence to find the truth. Assisted by her shepherd friends and the handsome agricultural inspector analyzing fleece contamination, Fleece uncovers a scheme involving fleece substitution, fraudulent micron counts, and a sophisticated operation passing off commercial wool as rare breed fleece. From suspicious grease content that reveals improper washing to staple lengths that don't match the breed standards, every lock of wool tells a story. But when Fleece discovers the victim was systematically downgrading small farmers' fleeces to buy them cheaply for a corporate mill, she realizes the killer is protecting small-scale shepherds from exploitation more valuable than any blue ribbon. With the festival's championship round approaching and the real fleece fraudster still shearing profits, Fleece must spin together the clues before her own reputation gets permanently felted.
