Sinossi

Hippolyte Taine's "History of English Literature" is a seminal three-volume work that meticulously charts the evolution of English literature from its earliest origins to the contemporary period, interweaving a profound analysis of societal influences, historical contexts, and philosophical movements that have shaped literary production. Taine's literary style is distinctive for its rigorous empirical approach, combining detailed textual analysis with broader cultural commentary, reflecting the influence of positivism in his critique. He dissects the interplay between literature and its milieu, compellingly arguing that literature is a reflection of the collective psyche of a nation or epoch, thus situating English literature within a broader European intellectual tradition. As a prominent critic and historian of literature, Taine's own formative experiences in mid-19th century France shaped his understanding of the social and political currents that influence artistic expression. His academic pursuits, coupled with his belief in the scientific study of society, allowed him to apply a methodical framework to literary criticism—forever altering how literature is analyzed. This background provided him with insight into the English literary landscape and its evolution, allowing Taine to produce a work that is both historical narrative and critical analysis. "History of English Literature" is essential reading for scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike. Taine's analytical lens not only enriches our understanding of English literature but also prompts us to consider the broader implications of literary practices within their cultural contexts. This comprehensive work serves as a cornerstone for anyone seeking to deepen their appreciation of literary history and the factors that shape it.

In the winter of 1944, as the Allies closed in on Nazi Germany from both the west and east, Adolf Hitler’s regime found itself increasingly cornered. Desperate to reverse the tide of the war, Hitler launched one last, audacious offensive: the Battle of the Bulge. Known as Germany’s last major push against the Allied forces, the battle took place in the dense forests of the Ardennes region in Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. This surprise attack, initiated on December 16, 1944, was meant to divide the Allied armies, capture vital port cities like Antwerp, and cripple the Allied war effort. In his final attempt to change the course of the war, Hitler gambled everything—hoping to break the deadlock and buy time for his collapsing forces.

The Battle of the Bulge was an enormous, high-stakes operation that relied on surprise, speed, and overwhelming force. The Ardennes was chosen not only for its strategic location but also because it was considered an unlikely place for a large-scale attack. The Allies, exhausted from months of fighting and underestimating the potential of a German counteroffensive, were caught off guard. The weather, heavy with snow and fog, further complicated the Allied defense and gave the Germans an initial advantage. Hitler believed that a swift, unexpected strike through the dense forests would disorient the Allies, creating confusion and panic, and ultimately forcing a favorable settlement.

However, this final gamble was doomed to fail. Despite the initial successes of the German forces, the battle’s outcome ultimately hinged on the determination of the Allied soldiers, the rapid mobilization of reinforcements, and the logistical prowess of the Allies.

Confronting taboos and misunderstandings about sexuality and aging, Couple Sexuality After 60: Intimate, Pleasurable, and Satisfying motivates couples to embrace sex and sexuality in their sixties, seventies, and eighties. The book busts two extreme myths—that people over sixty cannot and should not be sexual, and that the best way to be sexual is to emphasize eroticism, using sex toys, and "kinky sex."

Using a variable, flexible approach to couple sexuality based on the Good Enough Sex (GES) model, this book places the essence of sexuality in pleasure-oriented touching, not individual sex performance. Barry and Emily McCarthy introduce a new sexual mantra of "desire/pleasure/eroticism/satisfaction" with the goal of presenting a healthy model of sexuality to replace the traditional double standard that couples learn in young adulthood. Specific chapters focus on important areas like coming to terms with the new normal, female–male sexual equity, satisfaction being about more than intercourse and orgasm, valuing synchronous and asynchronous sexuality, psychobiosocial approaches to sexuality, and more.

In addition to aging heterosexual couples, single individuals and queer couples will find this book interesting. Additionally, this is a must-listen for sexual health clinicians and sex therapists with clients over the age of sixty.

On death row, the poorest and most numerous, with no family and no decent lawyer, are sometimes executed before all their appeals have been exhausted. Their fate consigned to modest prison cemeteries. In Texas, the number engraved on the cement stone begins with 999.
Out of 50 American states, 34 still have the death penalty. Why and how? The author's investigation took him to California, Utah, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi and Pennsylvania. A human immersion into the heart of American society and its judicial system, through encounters with death row inmates, lawyers and victims' families.
This fascinating book finely deconstructs the American myth of fair and infallible justice—from the deplorable conditions of confinement to daily abuse, from random legal recourse to political and judicial manipulation. More than just a sentence, the death penalty appears to be torture with many faces. And in an America on the move, there are signs that abolition is on the way.
999, is the fruit of a fact-finding mission carried out by the French association, Ensemble contre la peine de mort (ECPM), with financial support from the European Union.
