Sinossi

Hippocrates of Kos (c. 460 - c. 370 BC) was a Greek physician of the classical period who is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. He is traditionally referred to as the “Father of Medicine” and the Hippocratic school of medicine revolutionized ancient Greek medicine, establishing it as a discipline distinct from other fields with which it had traditionally been associated (theurgy and philosophy), thus establishing medicine as a profession. Our publishing house brings to the attention of readers the Aphorisms of Hippocrates, in the translation from ancient Greek into English made in the nineteenth century by Francis Adams, a Scottish medical doctor and translator of many Greek, Roman and Arabic ancient medical works.

Squirrels are a common sight, seemingly everywhere in wild and urban nature. But squirrels are more than amusing backyard entertainers, and few of us know much about them or fully appreciate their role in keeping the environment healthy. As stress on the natural world intensifies, should we be paying more attention to the plight of squirrels? In Squirrel, Nancy Castaldo shines new light on this familiar backyard mammal, exploring their staggering diversity and the many surprising ways they shape our world, our communities, and our cultures. Each chapter explores an aspect of squirrels and their close and sometimes fraught association with humans: their importance to myriad ecosystems through sophisticated food-caching strategies; their introduction to nineteenth-century urban parks as adorable ambassadors for nature; their complicated global status as both invasive and endangered; their role as celebrated cultural icons and social media memes; and ultimately, why we must prevent population declines and protect their well-being while we can. Like other wildlife species, squirrels are increasingly stressed by climate change, and their speculative fate may foreshadow our own. The book includes a detailed bibliography, an exhaustive list of squirrel species and their status, and tips for coexisting peaceably with squirrels in our yards and neighborhoods.

Despite significant progress in the management of oral health, tooth decay remains stubbornly widespread and resilient. Complicating this further, there remain gaps in clinical use and knowledge involving fluoride and remineralization therapies. To help address these problems, Demin/Remin in Preventive Dentistry explores demineralization and remineralization processes by synthesizing a variety of data and research to produce a fresh perspective from one who has devoted significant effort to improving remineralization therapies in preventive dentistry.
The source material for this book is fairly diverse, with more than 900 references called forth from various fields of study, including medicine, dentistry, chemistry, biology, materials science, food science, along with reports and articles from journalists, and nonprofit and government organizations. Divided into 10 distinct chapters, the topics discussed include oral bacteria, foods and drinks, acids, pH, sound and demineralized enamel structure, dental therapeutics used throughout history, fluoride and various fluoride formats (including toothpastes, varnishes and more), calcium phosphate systems, remineralization processes, and perspectives related to minimally invasive dentistry.
Global tooth decay remains a major socioeconomic burden, commanding the need for improved oral health strategies. Demin/Remin in Preventive Dentistry provides a fresh look at an old (and largely preventable!) problem by reviewing known information, as well as aspects not addressed in other dentistry books. Demin/Remin in Preventive Dentistry will appeal especially to those with a ‘prevention-first’ mindset, as well as researchers and clinicians passionate about delivering or improving oral health benefits for those of us both young and young at heart.

Who should read this book? Someone on their way out the door for their first or an early career health emergency and disaster risk management (HEDRM) experience, regardless of role, or someone who is trying to support one who is, or who does it all of the time and wants to know that they are not alone
What does this book tell the reader? It provides the shock of jumping into the cold water of health emergency and disaster risk management (HEDRM), without the risk of drowning; it focuses on practical aspects of the experience of doing the work that guidelines and playbooks (as important as they are) do not address
Who else might be interested in this book? People keen to understand how HEDRM happens in the context of highly communicable diseases, or about how global public health, emergencies, aid, and development mix, or medical history... the technical and contextual curious
Who should NOT read this book? Anyone who is looking for gory details
What is the main strength of this book? It is a raw view of the experience of conducting such responses at the clinical: public health interface, with some lessons durable across emergencies
What is the main weakness of this book? It carries all of the biases of such experiences. There is a lot not said; the book has snapshots and cannot relate the 10,000,000 events during the year not described
What is new in the 2024 edition? In print and e-book, overdue editing without loss of content, a forward that reflects on the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of themes in the book, and in the print edition available on www.amazon.com, a series of essays stepping back and exploring the ways in which people interact with the threat of infectious diseases that defines our willingness and readiness to meet them

So, this is how it often goes… even though you feel exhausted and cannot wait to get some relaxing good night’s sleep… when you get into bed and close your eyes, you just cannot seem to turn your mind off… your body feels tense… or you find yourself waking up every hour to check your phone. In an age of information and hustle, the natural rhythm of our bodies can often be easily disturbed… Your lifestyle, daily activities, diet, and emotional or physical well-being may all play a role in your body’s natural ability to fall asleep or enjoy deep sleep. While you may not have much control over how your day goes and how much caffeine you end up consuming to meet that deadline… imagine that the minute you get into bed is when you gain complete control over your mind and body
If it is difficult for you to disconnect from the day and make the decision to surrender to your body’s natural needs, you may consider creating a relaxing nighttime routine to help you with this. This may include putting your phone away from your bed, reading a book, journaling, practicing gratitude, and listening to this deep sleep meditation and affirmations. Regardless of what this may look like for you, consider this time as an opportunity to prep your mind and body to transition from an active state of doing to a state of relaxing. Let your body know that it is time to slow down and immerse itself in deep relaxation.
Centering our attention on our body, allows us to listen to it, acknowledge it and be aware of the cues it is giving us. When we lead hectic lifestyles or go through hardships, we disconnect from our bodies. Consider that nighttime is when you give love to your body by acknowledging all the hard work it did for you throughout the day… and invite it to relax and let go. By sending your loving attention to the different parts of your body, you are communicating that it is safe to let go and move into a state of relaxation
