Sinossi

Herodotus' "The Histories" stands as a monumental work in the canon of ancient literature, offering a detailed chronicle of the Greco-Persian wars and a rich tapestry of the cultural and political landscapes of the era. Written in a narrative style that blends prose with elements of poetry, Herodotus employs a unique historiographical approach, interweaving anecdotal accounts, oral traditions, and meticulous observations to illuminate the complexities of human behavior and fate. His inquiries reflect a profound interest in causality and the interplay between divine and human agency, situating his work at the intersection of history, mythology, and ethnography. Herodotus, often referred to as 'the Father of History,' was born in Halicarnassus around 484 BCE. His extensive travels throughout the known world heavily influenced his perspective, as he encountered diverse cultures and customs. This exposure not only informed his narrative style but also instilled in him a desire to preserve the memories of human actions, thereby ensuring that the deeds of both the great and the obscure were not forgotten in the sands of time. "The Histories" is not merely a record of events; it is an exploration of civilization itself. For readers seeking insight into the formation of Western historical thought and a nuanced understanding of ancient cultures, this text is indispensable. Herodotus' compelling storytelling and profound observations of human nature invite readers to reflect on the complexities of our shared past.

Burn-out affects hundreds of thousands of employees in France, and is spreading like an epidemic in the 21st century. One of the primary factors cited by specialists is increasingly brutal and manipulative managerial practices. 60% of employees feel that their manager is a source of stress for them.
With the force of analysis and vivid style that made his previous book Clan des seigneurs such a success, Paul-Antoine Martin bears witness with startling realism to the terrible collapse represented by burn-out, its causes and its impact on the lives of those it strikes. He describes the uncommonly violent management methods and harassment to which he was subjected for many months. More broadly, he denounces the totalitarian drifts underway in the world of work, as well as the general hypocrisy that reigns there, noting that society promotes leaders who are brutal, perverse and affectless.
Finally, the author tells how, thanks to his wife’s love, he gradually got back on his feet, free and stronger, despite the suffering, after-effects and relentlessness of his ex-employer. His testimony is a powerful message of hope, fighting spirit and dignity for the countless victims of burn-out. Paul-Antoine Martin, 57, an engineer by training (CentraleSupélec), has always worked in an industrial environment, from Anglo-Saxon multinationals to French public institutions. He has held senior executive positions, rubbing shoulders with captains of industry, politicians and senior civil servants.
Patrick Légeron is a psychiatrist, burn-out specialist and co-author of the Académie de médecine report on burn-out. He is the author of several books on the subject.

Set during the Napoleonic Wars, this story features two French Hussar officers, D'Hubert and Feraud. Their quarrel over an initially minor incident turns into a bitter, long-drawn out struggle over the following fifteen years, interwoven with the larger conflict that provides its backdrop. At the beginning, Feraud is the one who jealously guards his honor and repeatedly demands satisfaction anew when a duelling encounter ends inconclusively; he aggressively pursues every opportunity to locate and duel his foe. As the story progresses, D'Hubert also finds himself caught up in the contest, unable to back down or walk away. This Conrad short story evidently has its genesis in the real duels that two French Hussar officers fought in the Napoleonic era. Their names were Dupont and Fournier, which Conrad disguised slightly, changing Dupont into D'Hubert and Fournier into Feraud. In 1977, it was turned into a movie, "The Duellists", starring Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel.
