Sinossi

Hernán Cortés was a Spanish conquistador who played a crucial role in the Spanish colonization of the Americas. He was born in 1485 in Medellín, a town in what is now Extremadura, Spain. Cortés is best known for his conquest of the Aztec Empire in Mexico.

In 1519, Cortés led an expedition to Mexico with the intention of exploring and establishing colonies. Upon arriving, he defied the orders of the Governor of Cuba, who had instructed him to explore the coast, and instead decided to conquer the rich and powerful Aztec Empire ruled by Montezuma II.

Cortés and his small army of around 500 men arrived in the capital city of Tenochtitlán (present-day Mexico City) and formed alliances with indigenous groups who were enemies of the Aztecs. With the help of these allies and a combination of military tactics, diplomacy, and superior weaponry, Cortés managed to overthrow the Aztec Empire and capture Montezuma II.

However, Cortés's conquest was not without challenges. In 1520, the Aztecs rebelled against the Spanish, forcing Cortés and his forces to flee the city in an event known as the "Noche Triste" (Sad Night). They eventually regrouped, laid siege to Tenochtitlán, and successfully captured it in 1521, marking the end of Aztec dominance in the region.

After the conquest, Cortés became the governor of New Spain, which encompassed much of present-day Mexico and Central America. He ruled for several years, implementing policies that favored Spanish settlers and exploiting the region's resources for the benefit of the Spanish crown.

Cortés returned to Spain in 1528 and was granted the title of Marqués del Valle de Oaxaca (Marquis of the Valley of Oaxaca) by the Spanish king. However, his later years were marked by legal disputes and struggles to maintain his position and wealth.

Hernán Cortés is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of Spanish exploration and conquest. His conquest of the Aztec Empire led to the establishment of Spanish control over Mexico and laid the foundation for the colonization of other parts of the Americas by the Spanish Empire. However, his actions also resulted in the devastation and decline of indigenous cultures and populations.

This book contains the following titles:
Renaissance - When we think of the Renaissance, we often think of paintings. And indeed, many painters and sculptors were part of the artistic transformation the Renaissance caused. But there was more. The Renaissance basically formed a period of collective enlightenment and freedoms that put an end to certain tyrannies and false notions from the Middle Ages.
Dutch East India Trading Company - Did you know that the Dutch were some of the first who came up with stocks? They were also known for their gigantic fleet, their ships, their colonies, and so much more. The 17th century was a golden age, a golden century for the Dutch, who discovered how to go to the new world in Asia, America, and other continents to transport spices, minerals, and other materials.
Michelangelo - There is no doubt that Michelangelo is one of the most influential artists of all time, together with some other Renaissance geniuses such as Leonardo and Rafael. Michelangelo had a vision, a dream, and the talent to carry out those imaginations. His life, in our perspective, is a compilation of great works of art, architecture, sculptures, paintings, and intricate movements, contrast, colors, and anatomy of the human body. Religious and thematic symbolism are intertwined in his frescos and structures. Each year, millions of tourists admire his works.
Claude Monet - Claude Monet has been the icon for the impressionist movement. Painting vague strokes of color and contrast, water, and flowers were typical. Other aspects of the art weren’t as clear but were just as important, nonetheless.
Claude Monet certainly faced many struggles as he tried to build his passion for painting into a career. His family life wasn’t perfect either, but despite of all these obstacles, the French genius painter has left us a legacy and a new perspective on realism and technique in their purest forms.

The inspiration for this brilliant anthology is the "I Learnt About Flying from That" articles that first appeared in the RAF flight safety magazine Air Clues in the 1940s and continue to feature in the magazine to this day. Flying Through the Ranks gets a five-star start with an extraordinary tale from a marshal of the Royal Air Force and continues in the same vein. Men and women of every rank—pilots, navigators, engineers, a RAF regiment officer, and airmen too—reveal similar intriguing experiences in both war and peace. Exciting, amusing, poignant too at times, their stories say as much about the development of the RAF and the making of the Cold War warrior as they do about the individuals themselves. It's impossible not to be moved by these rousing stories of courage and leadership, risk-taking and pressure, invention and adventure. Starkly exposing human fallibility at times, they highlight the skill and improvisation central to the flying business. Other common themes across some uncommon accounts are the sheer exhilaration of flying, the role that luck plays in everyone's life, and the unspoken bond of respect that binds aviation professionals together. Strap yourself in for a top flight experience!

A fascinating exploration of the natural history of scent and human perceptions of fragrance from the viewpoint of plant and pollinator

Plants have long harnessed the chemical characteristics of aromatic compounds to shape the world around them. Frankincense resin from the genus Boswellia seals injured tissues and protects trees from invading pathogens. Jasmine produces a molecule called linalool that attracts pollinating moths with its flowery scent. Tobacco uses a similarly sweet-smelling compound called benzyl acetone to attract pollinators. Only recently in the evolutionary history of plants, however, have humans learned to co-opt their fragrances to seduce, heal, protect, and alter moods themselves.

In this wide-ranging and accessible new book, biologist-turned-perfumer Elise Vernon Pearlstine turns our human-centered perception of fragrance on its head and investigates plants' evolutionary reasons for creating aromatic molecules. Delving into themes of spirituality, wealth, power, addiction, royalty, fantasy, and more, Pearlstine uncovers the natural history of aromatic substances and their intersection with human culture and civilization.
