Sinossi

In "Pierre; or The Ambiguities," Herman Melville crafts a complex narrative that delves into the turbulent psyche of its titular character, Pierre Glendinning. This novel, set against the backdrop of early 19th-century American society, explores themes of identity, ambition, and the consequences of idealism through a rich, symbolic prose. Melville employs a fragmented narrative style, interspersed with philosophical musings and dense description, reflecting the tumultuous emotional landscape of his protagonist who grapples with familial obligation, societal expectations, and his own desires. The book stands out within the context of American Romanticism, resonating with the era's preoccupations while also subverting traditional norms of the novel form. Herman Melville, acclaimed for his profound works, including "Moby-Dick," experienced personal turmoil and crises of faith that profoundly influenced his writing. "Pierre" was written during a precarious time in Melville's life, marking his shift from commercial success to literary obscurity. The novel's challenging themes and experimental structure mirror Melville's struggle with his own identity as a writer and individual, paralleling the existential dilemmas faced by Pierre. For readers seeking a deep, introspective exploration of the human condition, "Pierre; or The Ambiguities" is highly recommended. This rich and multifaceted novel invites an engaged reading, challenging its audience to confront their own ambiguities and the complexities of moral choices in life.

'The Man Who Loved Islands' is a haunting story of a man who tries to control his life by making his world ever smaller by moving to increasingly smaller islands. Each one proves to be beyond his ability to control either other people or his sexual desire and finally the last island conquers him. The story can even be seen as a metaphor of man's inexorable march to death when we are all finally alone.

Memoirs of a Madman or Diary of a Madman is a farcical short story by Nikolai Gogol. Along with The Overcoat and The Nose, Diary of a Madman is considered to be one of Gogol's greatest short stories.
The tale centers on the life of a minor civil servant during the repressive era of Nicholas I. Following the format of a diary, the story shows the descent of the protagonist, Poprishchin, into insanity. Diary of a Madman, the only one of Gogol's works written in first person, follows diary-entry format.
Diary of a Madman centres on the life of Poprishchin, a low-ranking civil servant and titular counsellor who yearns to be noticed by a beautiful woman, the daughter of a senior official, with whom he has fallen in love. Sophie, the daughter of his boss, with whom he has fallen in love. As he said in his first sight of her, just after being a beast of a civil servant himself, "A footman opened the carriage door and out she fluttered, just like a little bird." Nothing comes of this love he feels for her; Sophie is effectively unaware of him. His diary records his gradual slide into insanity.

A bestseller from the moment of publication, Adam Bede, although on one level a rich and loving re-creation of a small community shaken to its core, is more than a charming, faultlessly evoked pastoral. However much the reader may sympathize with Hetty Sorrel and identify with Arthur Donnithorne, her seducer, and with Adam Bede, the man Hetty betrays,it is George Eliots's creation of the distant aesthetic whole - the complex, multifarious life of Hayslope - which so grips the reader's imagination. As Stephen Gill comments: 'Reading the novel is a process of learning simultaneously about the world of Adam Bede and the world of Adam Bede.'

A king was dying. An old man told his sons that the water of life would save him. Each one set out in turn. The two older ones, setting out in hopes of being the heir, were rude to a dwarf on the way and became trapped in ravines. When the youngest son went the dwarf asked where he was going, and he told him. The dwarf told him it was in a castle, and gave him an iron wand to open the gates and two loaves to feed to the lions inside. Then he had to get the water before the clock struck 12 when the gates would shut again.

Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 - November 14, 1915) was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community and of the contemporary black elite. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants. They were newly oppressed in the South by disenfranchisement and the Jim Crow discriminatory laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
HAVE YOU DONE YOUR BEST?: If you have not already done so-and I hope you have-I think that you will find this a convenient season for each one of you to stop and to consider your school-year very carefully; to consider your life in school from every point of view; to place yourselves, as it were, in the presence of your parents, or your friends at home; to place yourselves in the presence of those who stand by and support this institution; to place yourselves in the presence of your teachers and of all who are in any way interested in you.
