Sinossi

In "The Promise of American Life," Herbert David Croly presents a compelling analysis of American democracy and its promise of equality and opportunity for all citizens. Written in the early 20th century, the book employs a vigorous and polemical style that reflects the Progressive Era's fervent ideals. Croly critiques contemporary individualism, arguing that true American progress hinges on the integration of individual aspirations with collective welfare. His rhetorical prowess illuminates the social and political challenges of his time while advocating for a reimagined political philosophy that supports robust democracy through active government intervention. Herbert David Croly, an influential figure in American political thought and a co-founder of The New Republic, was deeply immersed in the political landscapes of his era. His experiences as a journalist and reformer informed his understanding of the disillusionment with capitalist individualism and the necessity for a more centralized approach to governance. By synthesizing diverse intellectual traditions, Croly sought to articulate a vision that would resonate with the American public and inspire future generations. "The Promise of American Life" is essential reading for anyone interested in the evolution of American political thought and the complexities of democracy. Croly's insights challenge readers to reflect on the balance between individual rights and communal responsibilities, making it a profound contribution to contemporary discussions on American identity and governance.

Community development lies at the heart of creating sustainable, thriving, and inclusive urban neighborhoods. It is a process that empowers residents, organizations, and stakeholders to work together toward shared goals, addressing pressing issues while building resilience and fostering a sense of belonging. This approach is not merely about improving infrastructure or economic growth; it is about nurturing the human connections that sustain communities and drive positive change.
At its core, community development is rooted in the idea that the people who live in a community are its greatest resource. Empowering individuals to take ownership of their neighborhoods fosters a sense of pride, responsibility, and collective action. By identifying and addressing local challenges—such as affordable housing, access to education, and environmental sustainability—residents can transform their shared spaces into vibrant, dynamic environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
The importance of community development is particularly evident in urban areas, where challenges like overcrowding, economic disparity, and social fragmentation often intersect. These densely populated neighborhoods are microcosms of society, representing both its struggles and its potential for innovation and progress. Community development efforts help bridge divides by fostering dialogue, collaboration, and mutual understanding among diverse groups. Through initiatives such as leadership training, mentorship programs, and local events, urban residents can strengthen their networks and create a culture of support and inclusivity.

Power. Fear. Violence. These three idols of Christian nationalism are corrupting American Christianity.

Andrew Whitehead is a leading scholar on Christian nationalism in America and speaks widely on its effects within Christian communities. In this book, he shares his journey and reveals how Christian nationalism threatens the spiritual lives of American Christians and the church.

Whitehead shows how Christians harm their neighbors when they embrace the idols of power, fear, and violence. He uses two key examples—racism and xenophobia—to demonstrate that these idols violate core Christian beliefs. Through stories, he illuminates expressions of Christianity that confront Christian nationalism and offer a faithful path forward.

American Idolatry encourages further conversation about what Christian nationalism threatens, how to face it, and why it is vitally important to do so. It will help identify Christian nationalism and build a framework that makes sense of the relationship between faith and the current political and cultural context.

Where is the driving force for change? Who envisions a better future, crafts the path to democracy, and strategizes the movement? Who fuels it with revolutionary zeal and the will to power? And where is the force that can fulfill the unfinished promise of Iran's Constitutional Revolution? In three words: The Iranian Citizenry. Thirty years before Iran's Constitutional Revolution, the treatise One Word (Yek Kalameh) ignited a movement, challenging absolute monarchy, advocating the rule of law, and empowering the people. Now, Two, Three Words (Do, Se Kalameh) draws inspiration from the courageous youth of Iran. It articulates their aspirations, forges a new discourse, and unites a narrative that could pave the way for democratic alternatives.
Aram Hessami is a professor of Political Science and Philosophy at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland. His research and publications focus on Democratic Transition, Discourse Theory, and Social Change. He received his BA, MA, and Doctorate in Political Science & Philosophy from The George Washington University in 1993. Dr. Hessami's specialization is in Western Political Thought and Post-modern philosophy.

Africa may have given rise to the first humans, and Egypt probably gave rise to the first great civilizations, which continue to fascinate modern societies across the globe nearly 5,000 years later. From the Library and Lighthouse of Alexandria to the Great Pyramid at Giza, the Ancient Egyptians produced several wonders of the world, revolutionized architecture and construction, created some of the world’s first systems of mathematics and medicine, and established language and art that spread across the known world.
For almost four millennia, the Great Pyramids of Ancient Egypt have been widely hailed as the single greatest archeological feat man has ever accomplished. The Great Pyramid at Giza is the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world to have survived into the modern age. Unlike so many pieces of the historical record which have been “re-discovered,” relatively recently (in the grand scheme of things,” in their four thousand years of existence, the Great Pyramids have never allowed themselves to be truly forgotten by the human civilization which has never ceased to regard them with wonder and awe.
Egypt also impressed its contemporaries. The 5th century B.C. Greek historian Herodotus wrote that Egypt was “the gift of the Nile” because the river made its soil so fertile and thus helped create one of the first great civilizations. Indeed, the land of Egypt so impressed the Greeks that when Alexander the Great conquered the Nile Valley in the 4th century B.C., he decided that he would build a new city on its soil and name it Alexandria. After Alexander, the city of Alexandria grew and became the most important city in the world for centuries as it watched and played a role in the rise and fall of numerous dynasties. The city also became home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World – the Lighthouse of Alexandria – and a center of culture and learning, which was exemplified by the Library of Alexandria.
