Sinossi

An in-depth introduction to the life, careers, and methodologies of crime scene investigators.

If the devil is in the details, then the crime scene investigator’s got him: conducting searches, collecting information, photographing, scrutinizing, analyzing—pursuing the culprit right down to the last scrap of evidence. Whether you’d like to become a crime scene investigator or simply want to see what it takes, this book is your ideal introduction to this fascinating aspect of crime detection.

Like a top-notch forensics expert, author Henry M. Holden traces the path that crime scene investigators follow as they learn and ply their trade. His behind-the-scenes look takes us from application to training, crime scene to lab, revealing the fine points of securing, examining, and processing evidence; identifying victims, and reenacting the crime; conducting police lineups and interviews, and administering polygraphs; and forensics and evidence analysis.

Warren Hastings is Chapter IV of Thomas Macaulay's Critical and Historical Essays, vol. III. It first appeared in the Edinburgh Review of October 1841 as a review of Memoirs of the Life of Warren Hastings, first Governor-General of Bengal. Compiled from Original Papers, by the Rev. G. R. Gleig, M. A. 3 vols. 8vo. London: 1841.This essay on is generally considered to be one of the finest by the great historian and great literary stylist, Thomas Babington Macalay. Macaulay himself served in India from 1834 to 1838, and as a Whig and a believer in progress in the nineteenth century sense, he urged that Indians be trained in useful knowledge -- western, that is, and particularly British learning, easily dismissing traditional Indian education as of no value. Though he is well aware of Hastings’s flaws, he nevertheless greatly admires him as one of the creators of Britain’s Asian empire. Today’s critics, of course, can easily dismiss both men as “Orientalists” (to use Edwin Said’s terminology) but they both remain essential to an understanding of nineteenth century British history and culture.( Nicholas Clifford)

Daniel O'Connell, often referred to as The Liberator, was an Irish political leader in the first half of the 19th century. One of the most remarkable historical figures in Irish history, he campaigned for Catholic Emancipation, including the right for Catholics to sit in the Westminster Parliament, and repeal of the Act of Union which combined Great Britain and Ireland.
Famous in his day as the most feared lawyer in Ireland, O'Connell tormented judges, terrorised opposing barristers, and won a reputation for saving the lives of so many men who would otherwise have been hanged. He became 'The Counsellor', the fearless defender of the people.
He secured that reputation through his campaign for Catholic emancipation when he founded the first successful mass democratic movement in European history, and became 'The Liberator'.

Ruth Kamps finds solace in nature and inspiration in the pine tree growing outside her kitchen window in "Living Life With 'Grace And Elegant Treeness'", her contribution to NPR's This I Believe series.
This I Believe is a National Public Radio program that features Americans, from the famous to the unknown, completing the thought that begins with the series title. The pieces that make up the program compel listeners to re-think not only what and how they have arrived at their own personal beliefs, but also the extent to which they share them with others.
Featuring a star-studded list of contributors that includes John McCain, Isabel Allende, and Colin Powell, as well as pieces from the original 1950's series including Helen Keller and Jackie Robinson, the This I Believe collection also contains essays by a Brooklyn lawyer, a woman who sells yellow pages advertising in Fort Worth, and a man who serves on the state of Rhode Island's parole board. The result is a stirring, funny and always provocative trip inside the minds and hearts of a diverse group of Americans whose beliefs, and the incredibly varied ways in which they choose to express them, reveal the American spirit at its best.

According to Stefan Zweig, no contemporary author, not even Marx or Nietzsche, delivered the radical spiritual shock that Tolstoy's works gave millions and millions of people around the world. But which Tolstoy are we talking about? For Zweig it is the essayist Tolstoy, the radical thinker and incorruptible anarchist. The Tolstoy who claims that the state is the great cover-up of social injustice through a complex system of violence based on parliaments, prisons, judges, tax collectors, the police and armies. The Tolstoy, who asserts that the religious and moral convictions of every individual are inalienable and that no outside power can establish their domain there. This audiobook contains an English translation of an essay about Tolstoy written by Stefan Zweig in his 1928 book „Drei Dichter ihres Lebens: Casanova, Stendhal, Tolstoi“. The biographical study, which does not skimp on criticism, offers an interesting perspective on what is probably the most important Russian novelist of the 19th century.
