Sinossi

This book focuses on the physiology and molecular biology of the front and back regions of the eye. Specifically, the chapters of this book cover topics that explain currently less understood aspects of retinal health as well as the use of zebrafish models to understand the molecular pathogenesis of associated diseases. This includes retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy ciliopathies in the eye, rhodopsin trafficking and associated disorders, and the biochemistry of cone defects. This book serves as a useful reference for scientists and graduate students seeking to understand protein trafficking mechanisms and metabolic control in retinal diseases.

    Holistic Therapy - Treating the...

Holistic healing is a comprehensive approach to wellness that recognizes the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses on treating specific symptoms or diseases in isolation, holistic therapy emphasizes the importance of understanding the whole person. This approach acknowledges that our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health are deeply intertwined and that true healing requires addressing imbalances across all these dimensions.
At its core, holistic healing views health not merely as the absence of illness but as a state of harmony and vitality. It aims to uncover the root causes of distress or disease, rather than just alleviating immediate discomfort. By considering the broader influences on health, such as lifestyle, environment, relationships, and personal beliefs, holistic therapy encourages individuals to take an active role in their own well-being.
A central tenet of holistic healing is the belief that the body has an innate ability to heal itself. Therapies and practices within this framework are designed to support and enhance the body’s natural healing processes. This can include physical modalities like nutrition, exercise, and bodywork, as well as mental and emotional techniques such as mindfulness, counseling, and stress management. Spiritual practices like meditation, prayer, or energy work also play a vital role in nurturing the soul and fostering inner peace.

Ontology Or the Theory of Being

In the domain of Ontology, there are many scholastic theories and discussions which are commonly regarded by non-scholastic writers as possessing nowadays, for the student of philosophy, an interest that is merely historical. This mistaken notion is probably due to the fact that few if any serious attempts have yet been made to transpose these questions from their medieval setting into the language and context of contemporary philosophy. Perhaps not a single one of these problems is really and in substance alien to present-day speculations.
The author has endeavoured, by his treatment of such characteristically “medieval” discussions as those on potentia and actus, essence and existence, individuation, the theory of distinctions, substance and accident, nature and person, logical and real relations, efficient and final causes, to show that the issues involved are in every instance as fully and keenly debated, in an altered setting and a new terminology, by recent and living philosophers of every school of thought as they were by St. Thomas and his contemporaries in the golden age of medieval scholasticism.
And, as the purposes of a text book demanded, attention has been devoted to stating the problems clearly, to showing the significance and bearings of discussions and solutions, rather than to detailed analyses of arguments. At the same time, it is hoped that the treatment is sufficiently full to be helpful even to advanced students and to all who are interested in the Metaphysics of the Schools.

Westover - Giving Girls a Place...

Westover, a girls' high school in Middlebury, Connecticut, has evolved from a finishing school for the Protestant elite, including F. Scott Fitzgerald's first love, to a meritocracy for pupils of many religions and races from all around the world. The fascinating account of the ups and downs of this female community is the subject of Laurie Lisle's well-researched and beautifully illustrated book. It tells an important story about female education during decades of dramatic social change in America.
This school for girls was founded in 1909 by emancipated New Women. The author describes the innovations of the idealistic minister's daughter who founded the school, her intellectual successor who turned it into a college preparatory school in the 1930s, the quiet headmaster who struggled to keep it open during the turbulent 1970s, and the prize-winning mathematics teacher, wife, and mother who then lead the school into a new era.

    "Eye-popping" – Sunday Times
    "Brilliant" – Iain Dale
    ***
An unputdownable true account of how a tenacious head teacher led one of the most challenging schools in the country to excellence.
No Excuses charts an extraordinary principal's journey from the moment she took over at a failing secondary school in a deprived area, where less than a quarter of children attained five or more A*–C GCSEs, and how she set about the gruelling task of transforming its reputation using her zero-tolerance, tough-love approach.
Armed only with a wicked sense of humour, fearless energy and a powerful vision, Alison Colwell put in place a stringent set of rules, including a strict uniform policy and a complete ban on mobile phones, provoking resistance and hostility from some parents, the wider community and on social media.
This is the darkly funny, moving story of how, together, teachers and their – often troubled – pupils rebuilt a school and community, with an inspirational head at the helm.
Charming, touching and full of brilliant leadership advice, this is the diary of the woman the Daily Mail labelled Britain's strictest head teacher.
