  Vasco da Gama, the 1st Count of Vidigueira, is widely celebrated as the first European to reach India by sea.   Da Gama’s successful voyage opened up new trade routes, changing the course of history and shaping the future of global commerce and cultural exchange. His discovery of a sea route to India was not just a geographical milestone but a transformative event that spurred the age of global imperialism. By connecting Europe directly to the wealth of the Indian subcontinent, da Gama paved the way for the Portuguese to establish a vast colonial empire that spanned from Africa to Asia. The Portuguese empire, founded on these maritime routes, would become a powerful force in global trade, controlling key trade routes and regions for centuries. 
  However, the Portuguese expansion under Vasco da Gama and his successors was not without controversy. The methods employed by the Portuguese in their expansion were often violent and ruthless. Da Gama and his crew used extreme brutality, including kidnapping and violence against local populations, which created a lasting legacy of fear and animosity between the Portuguese and India’s indigenous rulers. This harsh approach to colonization set a precedent for the broader patterns of Western colonialism that would dominate the Age of Exploration.

  A Bike at Large is the fourth book in Jo’s ‘At Large’ series. 
  When he was overtaken by a jogger on a borrowed mountain bike, Jo knew it was time for drastic action. Welcome to the world of a man in his 60s and his new e-bike. 
  His first injury occurred within one foot! Setting off for his first practice ride round a car park, he misjudged the width of the handlebars and scraped his hand on the cycle shop’s stone wall. 
  ‘You’ll go places you’ll never have dreamed of,’ said the shop owner. Prophetic words indeed. Eighteen hours later Jo was embedded in his neighbours hedge due to a clothing malfunction. Fortunately, before setting out he’d put his ego and self-esteem in the top drawer in the kitchen.

  By calling his e-bike a ‘Lifestyle Investment’, it took his wife’s mind off the cost. At the time she needed some new slippers, so it was a sensitive issue. Asked whether he was searching for eternal youth? ‘Not really,’ he said, ‘more trying to keep out of my eternal hole in the ground.’

  African American history is the part of American history that looks at the history of African Americans or Black Americans.
  Of the 10.7 million Africans who were brought to the Americas until the 1860s, 450 thousand were shipped to what is now the United States.
  Most African Americans are descended from Africans who were brought directly from Africa to America and became slaves. The future slaves were originally captured in African wars or raids and transported in the Atlantic slave trade.

  Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington. Washington rose to become the most influential spokesman for African Americans of his day. He describes events in a remarkable life that began in slavery and culminated in worldwide recognition.
