Sinossi

In "A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin," Harriet Beecher Stowe provides a compelling, detailed exposition that contextualizes her seminal work, "Uncle Tom's Cabin." This book serves not merely as a defense of her novel but also as a profound commentary on the realities of slavery in America. Stowe employs a meticulous, scholarly tone, blending personal testimony, historical accounts, and moral reasoning to illuminate the atrocities of the institution of slavery. The text addresses counterarguments presented by pro-slavery advocates and enriches the narrative with a call to social justice, reflective of the burgeoning abolitionist movement of the mid-19th century. Harriet Beecher Stowe, an ardent abolitionist and a prominent social reformer, was deeply influenced by her personal experiences and the injustices she observed in society. Raised in a religious household that emphasized moral duty and empathy, Stowe's conviction about the immorality of slavery catalyzed her writing. This work not only solidified her legacy as a pivotal figure in American literature but also served as a significant catalyst for the anti-slavery movement, galvanizing public opinion against the institution of slavery. "A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin" is indispensable for readers seeking to grasp the complex interplay between literature and social change. It offers profound insights into the historical context of slavery while illuminating Stowe's intentions as an author. Whether you are a scholar, a student, or a history enthusiast, this book serves as both an intellectual resource and a passionate reminder of the enduring fight for human dignity.

The Pandemic May Have Delayed Your Toddler, but They Will Not Be Defeated
This compassionate, science-based guide offers hope and practical strategies for parents of children whose critical developmental years (ages 2–4) were impacted by COVID-19 isolation.
Written by a child development expert, it explains how pandemic conditions disrupted normal social, emotional, and communication milestones and provides a comprehensive roadmap for helping children recover and thrive.
Rather than focusing on what was lost, Delayed, Not Defeated empowers parents with targeted approaches for supporting development across key domains:
    ●      building social skills through structured playdates and peer interactions
    ●      developing emotional regulation strategies for children with big feelings
    ●      creating language-rich environments to boost communication skills
    ●      using play as a powerful therapeutic tool
    ●      managing screen time thoughtfully
    ●      preparing children for successful school transitions
Each chapter combines the latest research with practical, easy-to-implement strategies that work in real family life. Special considerations address specific challenges, including sensory sensitivities, multilingual development, sibling dynamics, and when to seek professional support.
The book's central message is one of hope: What pandemic toddlers experienced was a developmental delay, not a developmental destiny.
With the loving guidance and evidence-based strategies provided in this book, children will do more than catch up—they'll develop unique strengths from navigating these extraordinary early experiences.

When you think of 'gambling' you might think of Vegas casinos, betting shops and football flutters but the risk of gambling is embedded in numerous corners of popular culture that many of us consume.
By considering the concept of 'soft gambling', No Dice asks how we could possibly link the Pokémon Trading Card Game with gambling. Can we compare Netflix to a night at the theatre? When does fictional gambling within video games go too far with their infamous loot boxes? Does such risk affect everyone or are socio-economic divides driving further inequality?
No Dice explores the messy world of gambling and risk that we encounter regularly, from childhood through adulthood, considering if it is worth the risk and if we even know what risks we might be taking.

Though the importance of hats is easy to overlook, it was deadly serious in more ways than one, impacting the beavers and birds used to make fashionable hats, the environment of the region, and the people fighting over the resources. Beaver hats put the Dutch, British, and French in conflict, and later the Americans and Canadians. Plumed women’s hats were considerably less important historically, but they had a huge ecological impact. The beaver is a crucial species that once had an immense impact on the environment around it, while the short era concerning the plume trade for women’s hats drove a number of bird species to near-extinction. Indeed, several species have never recovered their numbers. The end product was fashionable men’s and women’s hats, sold primarily in Europe and the United States, but from raw materials to finished products, these hats linked tribal peoples, traders, hunters, trappers, merchants, and soldiers. Whether it crossed their minds or not, countless men and women in London and Paris were linked to the North American wilderness and all the violence it entailed.
The fur trade had its tensions, but for many years, traders and natives worked out their own systems, times, and traditions, allowing many different groups to interact and even compete without issues that led to war. Though native groups sometimes found themselves in conflicts based on long-standing rivalries or relations with the Europeans, most of the fur traders, the trappers, the Indians, and Hudson’s Bay Company officials lived peaceably. The great amount of distance from one another in this land of millions of miles likely helped to alleviate tensions. When a new vision for the Hudson’s Bay Company came about, one where settlers, not itinerants, would be responsible for the colony, the rules changed.

The award-winning history of the women who went West to work in Fred Harvey's restaurants along the Santa Fe railway—and went on to shape the American Southwest

From the 1880s to the 1950s, the Harvey Girls went west to work in Fred Harvey's restaurants along the Santa Fe railway. At a time when there were "no ladies west of Dodge City and no women west of Albuquerque," they came as waitresses, but many stayed and settled, founding the struggling cattle and mining towns that dotted the region. Interviews and historical research help recreate the Harvey Girl experience. The accounts are personal, but laced with the history the women lived: the dust bowl, the depression, and anecdotes about some of the many famous people who ate at the restaurants—Teddy Roosevelt, Shirley Temple, Bob Hope, to name a few.

The Harvey Girls was awarded the winner of the 1991 New Mexico Press Women's ZIA award.
