Sinossi

Published in 1861, Harriet Jacobs's "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" was one of the first of the personal slave narratives. At the time this book was first published Harriet Jacobs was living as an escaped slave in the North, a precarious position given the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. Originally published under the pseudonym Linda Brent, "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is a gripping first hand account of the brutality endured by slaves and one of the few ever written by a woman.

Dr. Drew Pinsky is best known as the cohost of the long-running radio advice program Loveline. But his workday is spent at a major Southern California clinic, treating the severest cases of drug dependency and psychiatric breakdown. In this riveting book, Pinsky reveals the intimate and often shocking stories of his patients as they struggle with emotional trauma, sexual abuse, and a host of chemical nemeses: alcohol, marijuana, Ecstasy, heroin, speed, cocaine, and prescription drugs. At the center of these stories is Pinsky himself, who immerses himself passionately, almost obsessively, in his work. William and Harry is a fascinating insight into the lives and loves of two extraordinary young men who have captured not only the hearts and minds of the British public but those the world over. This is the definitive book about the princes, bringing their story right up to date. It is the tale of two brothers who have carried the legacy of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, into the twenty-first century and on whom the future of the House of Windsor largely depends.Drawing on her unique set of contacts, Katie Nicholl recounts the royal brothers' extraordinary lives and reveals William and Harry's real characters as they become front-line soldiers and modern princes. Through her network of sources, some of whom have agreed to speak for the very first time, Katie tells the story of one of Prince William's earliest romances and his struggle with his destiny as a future King of England. As a royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton seems more probable, Katie has spoken to a wealth of contacts close to the couple who reveal how their love affair really started at St. Andrews, the hurdles the pair overcame, and the challenges they still face. She recounts the story of Harry's time at Eton, his relationship with Chelsy Davy, and the three months he spent on the front line in Afghanistan. She analyzes William and Harry's complex relationship with their father and the woman who will one day become Queen Camilla. She talks to their friends, contemporaries, and confidants to paint a unique and revealing portrait of the two most famous brothers in the world.

Today, twenty-five years since Diana's death, seems the right moment for a reassessment of this remarkable woman. Did the Royal Family learn lessons from her life, about protection and privacy, about how to incorporate outsiders into their ranks, about how to manage scandal? Did it take any lessons from her death—and the public's reaction not only to that but also to the behavior of, in particular, the Queen and Prince Charles, in the aftermath? Or have the family and the Palace—the men in grey suits, as Diana called them—continued on the same track, unchanged, repeating many of the mistakes made with her, from her first nervous ventures in royal circles to her later defiance of traditional protocols? These and many other questions are explored in this authoritative book, written by two people closely associated with Diana: Inspector Ken Wharfe was the Princess's police protection officer for six years during the most turbulent period of her marriage to Prince Charles, and Ros Coward was chosen as author of the official book by the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Trust. This book is both an examination of the people and events of the time and an elegiac tribute to one of the most iconic figures of the late twentieth century.

Madison & Adams Press presents the Civil War Memories Series. This meticulous selection of the firsthand accounts, memoirs and diaries is specially comprised for Civil War enthusiasts and all people curious about the personal accounts and true life stories of the unknown soldiers, the well known commanders, politicians, nurses and civilians amidst the war.
Detailed Minutiae of Soldier Life in the Army of Northern Virginia is not a classical memoir work from the Civil War. Author did not want to write exclusively about his experience in the war, even though he drew on his time in the army for several chapters. Instead, he wanted to underscore the importance of common Confederate soldiers within Lost Cause memory. The Lost Cause of the Confederacy is an ideological assertion made by many Confederate veterans which claimed that the cause of the Confederate States during the American Civil War was just, heroic, and not centered on slavery.

Learning My Lines by Ray Brooks. 'Ray Brooks’ acting career has spanned more than four decades, from his breakthrough role in iconic 1960s film The Knack, to infamy as the murderer of Pauline Fowler in EastEnders. The diary Ray wrote while working on EastEnders provides us with a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes at Albert Square, and also prompts Ray to take dips into his past: growing up in Brighton with his bus conductress mother, working with Ken Loach on the ground-breaking BBC drama, Cathy Come Home, fighting off Daleks in Dr Who and starring as gambler Robbie Box in the hit TV show Big Deal. His theatrical tales cover early days in rep, almost appearing in The Sound of Music, and working on classic comedies by Alan Ayckbourn and Tom Stoppard. To a whole generation, Ray Brooks is the voice of Mr Benn, the popular children’s animated series, and his seductive tones have also been used to persuade us to buy everything from margarine to lemonade – until Terry Wogan got in on the act! But as the accolades build up over the years, so do the insecurities: What job will I get when this one finishes? That fat, bald bloke on the screen surely can’t be me? Can I still learn lines? Revealing the vulnerability of an actor’s life, this candid account is full of down-to-earth humour and captivating honesty.
