Sinossi

A small European kingdom, a dying king, a duchess who wants the throne for her line, an Austrian loan falling due, and an American who happens to be in the capital. MacGrath was a Syracuse newspaperman who became one of the best-paid novelists of his day and among the first to write seriously for the screen; this 1901 romance is briskly cynical about how kingdoms are actually disposed of — by bankers. Fifty-seven plates of café tables, garden corners and exiled royalty by painters including Edvard Munch and Eugène Lami give this tale of a kingdom traded over coffee its proper faces.

"The Gold-Bug" is a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe published in 1843. The plot follows William Legrand, who becomes fixated on an unusual gold-colored bug he has discovered. His servant Jupiter fears that Legrand is going insane and goes to Legrand's friend, an unnamed narrator, who agrees to visit his old friend. Legrand pulls the other two into an adventure after deciphering a secret message that will lead to a buried treasure.
After losing his family fortune, William Legrand has relocated from New Orleans to a remote cabin on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, along with his African-American servant Jupiter. The story's narrator, Legrand's friend, visits him one evening and Legrand tells him of an unusual scarab-like beetle ('bug') he has collected that day. Legrand has lent it to an officer stationed at nearby Fort Moultrie, but he draws a sketch of it and notes that its markings resemble a skull. When the narrator queries the accuracy of the drawing, Legrand becomes withdrawn and carefully locks it in his desk for safekeeping. Confused, the narrator takes his leave.

Two young men on the Solway sands in 1765, a laird with a fatal family face, and a third Jacobite rising that history does not record — because, Scott suggests, it fizzled out in a Solway inn with nobody willing to draw a sword. Half the book is letters, half is narrative, and the last chapter is the quietest death of a cause in English fiction. Scott put more of his own youth into it than into any other novel. Fifty-eight plates of eighteenth-century soldiers, volunteers and alms-giving, among them work by Gainsborough and Copley, answer the novel's own world of wavering loyalties and men who will not draw a sword.

Henry David Thoreau was an American writer and philosopher who lived in the 19th century. He is best known for his work Walden, a reflection on simple living in natural surroundings. Walden is Thoreau's account of his two-year experience living in a small cabin on the shores of Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts. In the book, he emphasizes the importance of living a simple, deliberate life and being self-sufficient. Thoreau's observations on the natural world and his critique of American society have made Walden a classic of American literature.

In addition to Walden, Thoreau wrote extensively on social and political issues of his time. One of his most famous works in this regard is Civil Disobedience, which advocates for nonviolent resistance to unjust laws. In the essay, Thoreau argues that it is not only a citizen's right, but their duty to disobey unjust laws and to be willing to accept the consequences of their actions. The essay has had a significant impact on political and social movements around the world, inspiring figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

Cape Cod is another of Thoreau's works, in which he describes his journey through the coastal region of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The book is a combination of natural history, personal observation, and social commentary. Thoreau's writing in Cape Cod is characterized by his vivid descriptions of the region's wildlife and natural features, as well as his reflections on the history and culture of the people who live there. Like his other works, Cape Cod showcases Thoreau's deep appreciation for nature and his belief in the importance of living a simple, intentional life.
