Sinossi

This book is the outcome of two years of work for the Learning from Asia project, run by the Learning Institute of the Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) in cooperation with several well-established international educational researchers and Asian doctoral students studying in Hungary. The chapters of the book are modified versions of papers presented by their authors at the Learning from Asia in Education conference held at MCC’s Budapest Center in Autumn 2023. Within the pages of this book, you will discover novel practices and innovative approaches, shedding light on how the West can learn from the East in education in the 21st century. The volume is organized into three parts, as follows: a framework, written by the leaders of the Learning from Asia project, conceptualizing its purpose and background; nine expert studies by invited academics, outstanding international experts who share their ideas about Asia–Europe learning; and eight chapters contributed by Asian doctoral students studying in Hungary, who present their research findings using the ‘Asia as method’ approach. The book concludes with an epilogue, reflecting on the whole book and the conception of the Learning from Asia project.Authors: János Setényi, Gábor Halász, János Gordon Győri, Yun You, Katherine Forestier, Chang Da Wan, Que Anh Dang, Yan Liu, Lucia Chauvet, Wei Zhang, Mark Bray, Byambasuren Nyamkhuu, Adrian Estrela Pereira, Sounantha Phavadee, Attila Czabaji Horváth, Thiri Pyae Kyaw, Moldir Pocstar, Pu Yu, Yang Yang, Anisa Trisha Oroc Pabingwit, Mária Hercz, Yingjie Xu, Diya Peng, Marhadi Marhadi, Cifebrima Suyastri, Aisi Li

This book contains these two titles:
Exploitation - Economic inequality has become one of the defining challenges of our era, shaping the trajectory of societies across the globe. The income gap between the wealthiest and the poorest continues to widen, creating a stark divide that influences not only financial security but also access to education, healthcare, and opportunities. This growing disparity raises questions about the fairness of our systems and the sustainability of our futures. The roots of inequality are complex, intertwining historical legacies with contemporary policies and practices. In many nations, the transition from agrarian economies to industrialized and globalized markets created unprecedented wealth. However, this wealth was not evenly distributed. The rise of capitalism, technological advancements, and shifts in labor dynamics often concentrated power and resources in the hands of a few, leaving vast populations struggling to make ends meet.
War Crimes - The need for accountability in the face of war crimes is critical. It is not only about bringing perpetrators to justice but also about establishing a global standard that deters such crimes in the future. The introduction of international laws and institutions aimed at prosecuting war crimes marks a pivotal shift in the international community's approach to warfare. The atrocities committed during World War II, particularly the Holocaust and other acts of genocide, were a wake-up call for the global community. This led to the creation of the Nuremberg Trials, the first real attempt to hold individuals accountable for war crimes, and set the foundation for modern international law.

Many Americans take comfort and convenience for granted. We eat at nice restaurants, order groceries online, and hire nannies to care for kids.

Getting Me Cheap is a riveting portrait of the lives of the low-wage workers—primarily women—who make this lifestyle possible. Sociologists Lisa Dodson and Amanda Freeman follow women in the food, health care, home care, and other low-wage industries as they struggle to balance mothering with bad jobs and without public aid. While these women tend to the needs of well-off families, their own children frequently step into premature adult roles, providing care for siblings and aging family members.

Based on years of in-depth field work and hundreds of eye-opening interviews, Getting Me Cheap explores how America traps millions of women and their children into lives of stunted opportunity and poverty in service of giving others of us the lives we seek. Destined to rank with works like Evicted and Nickle and Dimed for its revelatory glimpse into how our society functions behind the scenes, Getting Me Cheap also offers a way forward—with both policy solutions and a keen moral vision for organizing women across class lines.

The rural roads that led to our planet-changing global economy ran through the American South. That region's impact on the interconnected histories of business and ecological change is narrated here by acclaimed scholar Bart Elmore, who uses the histories of five southern firms—Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, Walmart, FedEx, and Bank of America—to investigate the environmental impact of our have-it-now, fly-by-night, buy-on-credit economy. Elmore explores the historical, economic, and ecological conditions that gave rise to these five trailblazing corporations. He then considers what each has become: an essential presence in the daily workings of the global economy and an unmistakable contributor to the reshaping of the world's ecosystems. Even as businesses invest in sustainability initiatives and respond to new calls for corporate responsibility, Elmore shows the limits of their efforts to "green" their operations and offers insights on how governments and activists can push corporations to do better.

Our lives are built around businesses that connect far-flung rural places to urban centers and global destinations. This "country capitalism" that proved successful in the US South has made it possible to satisfy our demands at the click of a button, but each click comes with hidden environmental costs.
