Sinossi

In Houston, Texas, the energy capital of the world, oil and gas are king. To the shock of the city, Jonathan Pendergast, the CEO of one of the largest oil companies in the country, is gunned down on the front steps of his own home in the wealthy, venerable neighborhood of River Oaks. One month later, his neighbor, Marvin Green, a nationally known professor at Rice University, was shot point-blank in the head in his office while working late on his latest anti-global warming book. The professor is an MIT-trained scientist and is a well-known advocate for representing oil companies' views that CO₂ emissions do not cause global warming. Both were killed with 9mm handguns. The two have worked together before. Possible motives for the two killings include ambition, jealousy, envy, inheritance, ecological passion, and even ordinary robbery. Viable suspects are plenty. Mrs. Pendergast hires Dirk Wolfson, a private investigator and an ex-prosecutor, to find the killer or killers. Dirk has his own shadowy demons to deal with. As Dirk culls and analyzes evidence during the investigation, he ponders to himself, are these killings directly related, or are they random killings by a disgruntled employee or a misguided, passionate environmentalist? Dirk is keen on using modern technology to solve the murders.

Departing from his more fantastical worlds, Burroughs delivers a grounded yet thrilling story filled with tension, mistaken identities, and unfolding secrets.

The story begins in a quiet American setting where an unusual chain of events quickly escalates into a complex situation involving suspicion, pursuit, and hidden motives. The pace is fast and furious with old-fashioned detection winning out against the forces of villainy - Daily Mail
'The plotting is excellent, with admirable narrative drive . an engaging and entertaining read' Historical Novels Review
January 1901. Abigail and Daniel Wilson, often lauded as 'The Museum Detectives', are on their way to the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza. Their explorations of the pyramid, including the Robbers' Tunnel, take a very sinister turn when they come upon the dead body of a man who has been brutally garrotted. Investigations by the local police reveal him to be Simeon McGruder, a wealthy American who is financing an excavation of the pyramids. When Daniel and Abigail return to Cairo they are asked by the American Embassy if they can take on the case, but they have a difficult path to tread as they try to keep different factions onside: the British and American authorities, the puppet Egyptian Government and officials, while at the same time facing lies and deviousness from McGruder's associates and friends.
Perfect for fans of Mark Ellis and T.E. Kinsey
    Readers love Jim Eldridge:
'The sense of time and place created is perhaps my favourite aspect of these books, and whilst I thoroughly enjoy the mystery behind the murders, which are often very visceral, despite the cosy nature of the books, I love feeling as if I am walking alongside the characters, smelling, seeing, hearing, feeling and tasting everything they are.'
    'Well-written and entertaining historical mystery.'
' I fully lost myself in from the opening chapter. Memorable characters, atmosphere galore, and masterful plotting all combine into an impeccable mystery.'
'Great story, well-paced and keeps you guessing.'
Jim Eldridge is a prolific author of series such as Cathedral Mysteries series, The Hotel Mysteries series, Museum Mysteries series and more, but each book can be read individually.
