Sinossi

As one can guess from the title, this book revolves around the region called Forest of Dean, which is a geographical, historical and cultural region in the western part of the county of Gloucestershire, England. It forms a roughly triangular plateau bounded by the River Wye to the west and northwest, Herefordshire to the north, the River Severn to the south, and the City of Gloucester to the east. The area is characterized by more than 110 square kilometers (42 sq mi) of mixed woodland, one of the surviving ancient woodlands in England. A large area was reserved for royal hunting before 1066, and remained as the second largest crown forest in England, after the New Forest. Although the name is used loosely to refer to the part of Gloucestershire between the Severn and Wye, the Forest of Dean proper has covered a much smaller area since the Middle Ages. In 1327, it was defined to cover only the royal demesne and parts of parishes within the hundred of St Briavels, and after 1668 comprised the royal demesne only. The Forest proper is within the civil parishes of West Dean, Lydbrook, Cinderford, Ruspidge, and Drybrook, together with a strip of land in the parish of English Bicknor.

This book contains three separate books, all related to myths on the North and South American Continents:
Aztec Mythology: The Aztec Empire, one of the most powerful and complex civilizations of Mesoamerica, was not only remarkable for its military conquests and grand architecture but also for its deeply spiritual and mythological worldview. At the heart of Aztec society was a profound belief in the gods and the sacredness of ritual, which governed everything from daily life to the empire's grandest ceremonies. Aztec mythology, rich with gods, cosmic battles, and creation stories, shaped the culture and practices of this ancient civilization. Understanding Aztec mythology is essential to understanding the values, actions, and worldview of the Aztec people, as it provided the framework within which they interpreted their world and their place within it.
Inca Mythology: The Inca Empire, at its zenith, spanned much of South America, including present-day Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and parts of Chile and Argentina. Known for its advanced architecture, agricultural systems, and administrative organization, the Inca civilization also possessed a deeply spiritual culture. Central to their worldview was a rich tapestry of mythology that explained the creation of the world, the origins of humankind, and the roles of the gods in the natural and spiritual realms.
Maya Mythology: Maya mythology stands as one of the most intricate and profound systems of stories and beliefs in the ancient world, reflecting the depth of a civilization that thrived for thousands of years. These myths, preserved through oral traditions and later written texts such as the Popol Vuh, reveal the Maya’s understanding of the cosmos, their relationship with nature, and their spiritual connection to the divine.

The first comprehensive history of "psychiatry's bible"—the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Over the past seventy years, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM, has evolved from a virtually unknown and little-used pamphlet to an imposing and comprehensive compendium of mental disorder. Its nearly 300 conditions have become the touchstones for the diagnoses that patients receive, students are taught, researchers study, insurers reimburse, and drug companies promote. Although the manual is portrayed as an authoritative corpus of psychiatric knowledge, it is a product of intense political conflicts, dissension, and factionalism. The manual results from struggles among psychiatric researchers and clinicians, different mental health professions, and a variety of patient, familial, feminist, gay, and veterans' interest groups. The DSM is fundamentally a social document that both reflects and shapes the professional, economic, and cultural forces associated with its use.

In DSM, Allan V. Horwitz examines how the manual, known colloquially as "psychiatry's bible," has been at the center of thinking about mental health in the United States since its original publication in 1952.

There is no them — there is only us, celebrating our common humanityWhatever your spiritual path, chances are that the primary tenets of your faith include universal love, acceptance, and compassion. Yet three thousand years after Moses, twenty-five hundred years after the Buddha, two thousand years after Jesus, and fifteen hundred years after Muhammad, we are still divided by our differences. Religious intolerance, discrimination, even persecution and violence make up the not-so-golden rule. The Interfaith Alternative shows us how we can celebrate each other without fear of losing our own identity. It illuminates the path to creating a nurturing spiritual community that honors and includes all religious languages—an alternative to Jews worshiping only with Jews, Christians with Christians, and Muslims with Muslims. In doing so, it demonstrates that through coming together in a mutually supportive environment we can concentrate on our shared desire to remake the world into a compassionate, loving place. At its core, Interfaith is about community and justice. Once we truly embrace diversity, we embrace our common humanity. A powerful antidote to the current climate of fear and mistrust, The Interfaith Alternative argues that it is not how we encounter the sacred, but what we do about it that counts—there are positive alternatives to religious lines in the sand.Steven Greenebaum is an Interfaith minister whose experiences directing choirs of different faiths and denominations have helped him to understand the profound wisdom of many spiritual traditions. Steven has dedicated his life to working for social and environmental justice. He is the founder of the Living Interfaith Church in Lynnwood, Washington.
