The feminist book they tried to ban in France‘A delightful book’ Roxane Gay
Women, especially feminists and lesbians, have long been accused of hating men. Our instinct is to deny it at all costs. (After all, women have been burnt at the stake for admitting to less.)
But what if mistrusting men, disliking men – and yes, maybe even hating men – is, in fact, a useful response to sexism? What if such a response offers a way out of oppression, a means of resistance? What if it even offers a path to joy, solidarity and sisterhood?
In this sparkling essay, as mischievous and provocative as it is urgent and serious, Pauline Harmange interrogates modern attitudes to feminism and makes a rallying cry for women to find a greater love for each other – and themselves.
Pauline Harmange's work is a top-rated exploration of modern attitudes towards feminism in Europe, a short yet impactful autobiography that delves into the social and political aspects of sexism. It's not just a biography, but a collection of essays that challenge the status quo and inspire a greater love for sisterhood and self.
For fans of Rebecca Solnit (A Field Guide To Getting Lost), Bell Hooks (killing rage), Laura Bates (Sisters of Sword and Shadow), Mikki Kendall (Hood Feminism), and Naomi Wolf (The Beauty Myth).

"Phelps's writing reads like a mystery novel." -Suspense Magazine

The crime stunned quiet Mineral Wells, Texas: 49-year-old Bob Dow shot execution-style in his own bed, his invalid mother locked in the next room-and a cache of homemade porn starring the town's underage girls. The two accused killers-teen lovers Bobbi Jo Smith and Jennifer Jones-were on the run, intent on going out in a cross-country blaze of glory. M. William Phelps exposes a gripping tale of sexploitation, lust, and betrayal, while questioning the court's fateful verdict in a tantalizing forensic puzzle. Were both girls equally guilty of murder? Or was one merely a pawn in the other's dainty, blood-stained hands?

An award-winning, personal account of US amphibious operations in WWII by a veteran Coast Guardsman—illustrated with photographs and drawings.

During World War II, Ken Wiley was a Coast Guardsman on an attack transport in the Pacific. In this work of historical memoir, Wiley relates the complex and often nerve-wracking story of how the United States projected its power across six thousand miles of ocean. Each invasion was a swirl of moving parts, from frogmen to fire support, transport mother ships to attack transports. In this vivid account, Wiley “brings the reader close to the experiences of another band of brothers,” from the camaraderie of young men facing unimaginable circumstances to the last terrifying stage when courageous soldiers stormed the beaches (Military Illustrated).

Wiley participated in the campaigns for the Marshall Islands, the Marianas, the Philippines, and Okinawa. He recounts each with a precise eye for detail, relating numerous aspects of landing craft operations, such as ferrying wounded, that are often overlooked.

Winner of the 2008 Foundation for Coast Guard History Book Award.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, it was common for discoveries in branches of science such as botany, astronomy and medicine to be described in book-length treatises in verse. By the end of the 19th century this mode of popularising science was falling from favour as the studies of science and the humanities diverged and study became more specialised. This small selection of somewhat lighter-hearted verse written by distinguished scientists and mathematicians of the day includes poems by James Clerk Maxwell, William J. Macquorn Rankine and James Joseph Sylvester. (Summary by Ruth Golding)

A gripping account of the man who emerged as a national hero through his military successes—and became the seventh President of the United States.

Orphan. Frontiersman. President. The rise of Andrew Jackson to the highest office in America has become a legend of leadership, perseverance, and ambition. Central to Jackson’s historic climb—long before the White House—was his military service. Scarred permanently as a child by the sword of a British soldier, Jackson grew into an unwavering leader, a general whose charisma and sheer force of personality called to mind those of George Washington a generation earlier.

As commander of the Tennessee militia in the War of 1812, Jackson became “Old Hickory,” the indomitable spearhead in a series of bloody conflicts with the Creek on the southwest frontier. Slight of frame with silver hair that seemed to stand on command, Jackson once stood down a mutinous brigade as an army of one. Then came New Orleans. Author Paul Vickery chronicles Jackson’s defining battle and the decisions a single, impassioned commander made to ensure a growing nation could, once and for all, be free of British might. The hero of New Orleans infused America, for the first time, with a sense of nationalism.

Jackson was decisive and unforgiving, a commander firmly in his element. In his own words, “One man with courage makes a majority.” The lessons of one extraordinary general endure.

Mary Rackham was born in Norwich on 14th August 1848 to a merchant family. Little is known of her early life and her biography only re-appears in September 1871 with marriage to Fairman Joseph Mann, a farmer with 800 acres.

Mary moved to Shropham, Norfolk and became involved with the workhouse, visiting the sick and other unfortunates of the parish, her observations and experiences a valuable source for her later stories.

She took up writing, partly to offset the dreary village life of her surroundings, in the 1880s and published her first novel, ‘The Parish of Hilby’ (1883) at her own expense. It was well received by the critics.

Thus began a career that spanning three decades provided thirty-three novels, hundreds of short stories, and fourteen plays.  Her work was largely focused on rural life in Norfolk and centered on the fictional town of Dulditch, with grim but authentic accounts of poverty and deprivation.

Her marriage produced one boy and three girls. With her husband's death in 1913, she moved to Sheringham.

She is regarded as a major contributor to East Anglian literature with particular praise given to her short stories.

Mary E Mann died on 19th May 1929. She was 80. Her grave-marker is a carved open book with the epitaph ‘We bring our years to an end, as if it were a tale that is told’.

Life in ‘Ben Pitcher's Elly’ is degrading, awful and unvarnished. The chances of this young girl having a happy life are remote but her story must be heard.
