Sinossi

In "The Greatest Works of Gustave Flaubert," the celebrated author distills his most distinguished narratives, showcasing his mastery of literary realism and psychological depth. Through vivid prose and intricate characterizations, readers are drawn into the tumultuous lives of characters like Emma Bovary and the profound yet quiet struggles depicted in "Sentimental Education." Flaubert's meticulous attention to detail and innovative use of free indirect discourse invite a comprehensive exploration of themes such as desire, social constraints, and existential melancholy, set against the backdrop of 19th-century France. Gustave Flaubert, a pioneer of the modern novel, grappled with the conventions of his time, often reflecting on the disillusionment of the bourgeoisie and the profound human condition. His relentless pursuit of literary perfection and obsession with style stemmed from a desire to transcend the trivialities of society. Flaubert's life experiences, including his tumultuous love affairs and critiques of contemporary society, shaped the poignant and often cynical perspective found within his works, making them not only a reflection of his era but also a timeless commentary on universal human struggles. For those seeking a profound literary experience, "The Greatest Works of Gustave Flaubert" is an essential read. It is an invitation to delve into the intricacies of passion, ambition, and despair, offering both scholars and casual readers a lens into Flaubert's unparalleled exploration of the human psyche. This compendium serves as a rich testament to Flaubert's enduring impact on literature, making it a must-have for any connoisseur of the written word.

Dracula, a Gothic novel by Bram Stoker, published in 1897, is derived from old vampire legends and is the basis for an entire genre of literature and film. Dracula, the archetypal vampire, is depicted in the novel as having been the origin of the many werewolf legends. The willowy count is believed to have been inspired by the 15th-century Vlad the Impaler, and by Sir Henry Irving, an actor for whom Stoker was a personal assistant. One of Dracula's most iconic powers is his ability to turn others into vampires by biting them and thus infecting them with the vampiric disease. Stoker's novel takes the form of an epistolary tale, in which Count Dracula's characteristics, powers are narrated by multiple narrators. Count Dracula is an undead, centuries-old vampire, and Transylvanian nobleman descended from Attila the Hun. He inhabits a decaying castle in the Carpathian Mountains near the Borgo Pass. Dracula is devilishly handsome and charismatic, with a veneer of dark aristocratic charm. Likewise, he possesses supernatural abilities gained through his intimate dealings with the Devil. Dracula does not cast a shadow or reflect in mirrors. He can defy gravity and possesses superhuman agility, able to climb vertical surfaces upside down. In the novel he also has great hypnotic, telepathic and illusionary powers. This is the rare, long lost original 1897 manuscript - published here for the first time.

A contribution to the literature of the American Renaissance, the work's genre classifications range from late Romantic to early Symbolist. Its reputation as a "Great American Novel" was established only in the 20th century, after the centennial of its author's birth.

Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.

He knows they are the eggs of the aepyornis - a bird which has been extinct for hundreds of years. He is amazed, when hunger forces him to try one of the eggs, to find that it is fresh. When he opens the second egg several days later, he is horrified to find a still live embryo inside it. Before he is forced to eat the third and final egg, his canoe is cast up on a deserted atoll, where he finds fresh water and plenty of fish in the lagoon. Then the final egg hatches, and the strangest part of the adventure begins.
