Sinossi

In "The Loves of Great Composers," Gustav Kobbé explores the intricate relationships and romantic entanglements of some of the most celebrated figures in classical music. Richly textured and vibrantly written, Kobbé's work combines biographical detail with an engaging narrative style, inviting readers into the personal lives of composers like Beethoven, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky. The book sheds light on how these emotional experiences influenced their music, contributing to a deeper understanding of their artistic legacies within the context of romanticism and the broader cultural movements of their times. Gustav Kobbé was not only an esteemed musicologist but also an accomplished playwright and critic. His deep-rooted passion for music, combined with his exposure to its operatic and symphonic forms during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, likely shaped his insights into the emotional landscapes of these composers. Kobbé's travels and interactions with musical circles at the height of their prominence provided him with a wealth of knowledge, which is evident in his meticulous research and empathetic portrayals. This captivating book is an essential read for anyone interested in the intersections of love and music. Kobbé's eloquent prose and insightful anecdotes make it accessible to both casual readers and scholars alike, offering a unique lens through which to appreciate the profound impacts of personal relationships on the creative processes of some of history's greatest musical figures.

Deng Xiaoping’s rise to power is a tale marked by perseverance, political acumen, and the ability to navigate the turbulent political landscape of 20th-century China. Born in 1904 in the Sichuan province, Deng’s early life was shaped by his education in France, where he studied at the University of Paris. His exposure to Marxist ideas during this time laid the foundation for his later role in the Chinese Communist Party. Upon his return to China, Deng became an important figure in the party’s early years, rising through the ranks as a trusted leader.
Deng’s political career began during the Second Sino-Japanese War, where he served in key military roles, building his reputation as a capable leader. However, it was during the Chinese Civil War that Deng truly began to cement his place in the party hierarchy. His involvement in the revolution and his leadership of various military campaigns helped to solidify his standing as a rising star in the Communist Party. Despite the chaos and upheaval surrounding the war, Deng’s strategic thinking and leadership made him an indispensable figure in the fight against both the Japanese and later the Nationalists.
After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Deng continued to rise through the ranks of the Communist Party, serving in various influential positions. However, his career was not without its setbacks. During the Cultural Revolution, a political movement led by Mao Zedong, Deng fell out of favor and was purged from his positions of power. He was sent to work on a farm, and his political influence was effectively diminished. Yet, despite these challenges, Deng’s political resilience would eventually lead to his return to power.

Dick Foth can’t stop telling stories. He's been making sense of life through story since he first realized words could become sentences. Now, after eight decades, friends have finally convinced Foth to record the stories he loves to tell in the way he loves to tell them: to a live audience. Stories I Love to Tell became a reality one evening at the Capital Turnaround in Washington, D.C.—a setting for some of Foth’s greatest adventures. And now you are invited into the audience, to find reasons for hope, courage to face hard things, and stories that bring us back together. Our brains are wired for and by story. Memories live in stories; relationships flourish there; identity is shaped there. Values ripen, and belonging is found across generations—around campfires and dinner tables—when moments turn into stories. Why listen to someone else’s stories? If it’s true that every human being somehow reflects God—and Foth believes it is—then maybe stories are the mirrors between every family, tribe, and person on planet Earth. In other words, it’s our stories that give our relationships a chance.Foth especially loves childhood stories, “because when I tell a story from my childhood, it reveals who I am. It is the lens through which I see my world.” As you listen to Stories I Love to Tell, you will see your own world more clearly. You will find yourself thinking, dreaming, and even feeling like a child again. There will be greater heroes to follow, deeper joys to discover, and even more of yourself to see. Foth’s low, kind, and rumbling voice constantly reminds us of the people who care for us, cheer us on, and—almost without our knowing it—become the heroes of the stories we, too, will love to tell. Enjoy!

    ABOUT THE FILM
Se7en is a psychological crime thriller directed by David Fincher. The film follows two detectives, the seasoned William Somerset and the impulsive David Mills, as they investigate a series of gruesome murders based on the seven deadly sins. The killer, known as John Doe, orchestrates his crimes as a twisted form of social commentary, leading the detectives into a dark and disturbing world. With its grim atmosphere, Se7en explores themes of morality, justice, and the human condition, using tension, suspense, and psychological horror to delve deep into the minds of both the detectives and the killer.

    TRIVIA SAMPLES:

“Leland Orser prepared for his intense interrogation scene by rapidly breathing in and out to saturate his body with oxygen, enabling him to hyperventilate. Additionally, he stayed awake for several days to achieve a disoriented look for his character.”

“Initially, New Line executives were opposed to the film's ending, but Brad Pitt insisted on keeping it as is, refusing to participate if any changes were made.”

“Director David Fincher told both Kevin Spacey and Brad Pitt that while the film might not be the movie they'd be remembered for, it would be one they'd take immense pride in.”

“During the filming of the chase scene where Mills follows John Doe in the rain, Brad Pitt fell and injured his arm by smashing it through a car windshield. The injury was later incorporated into the script.”
