Sinossi

Media Representation Battles explores how Indigenous communities are actively challenging stereotypical portrayals in film, television, and media to reclaim their narratives and assert cultural sovereignty. These misrepresentations perpetuate harmful stereotypes, impacting Indigenous self-perception, societal treatment, and opportunities. The book highlights the power dynamics in media and how Indigenous communities leverage their agency through counter-narratives and media activism.

One intriguing fact is the book's exploration of how historical, colonial narratives contribute to ingrained biases in media representation. The book examines the historical context of Indigenous representation, contemporary resistance strategies, and the impact of these efforts. It adopts a decolonizing approach, centering Indigenous voices and experiences.

Through media content analysis, interviews, and archival research, the book offers tangible examples of successful interventions, providing practical implications for media creators, educators, and activists. The book culminates with an analysis of the broader societal impact of these efforts, examining shifts in public perception and policy changes.

Exploration of Earth’s wilderness areas became an international obsession in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as economically advantaged nations, in particular European powers and the United States were well equipped to mount exhaustive expeditions. From previously inaccessible forests and jungle country to the world’s great mountain ranges, adventurers sought out the greatest extremes of climate and terrain in a race to plant the first flag where humanity struggled to survive.
An earlier wave of explorers led to the opening of the New World, and early polar expeditions saw ancient ships of various nations sail along the coastlines of Greenland and within reach of the Arctic and Antarctic continents. Many 19th century figures approached the polar region with an eye to traversing it. Most notable among them was British explorer Sir James Clark Ross, who took the Erebus and the HMS Terror to the southernmost coastlines of the planet. Ross is probably the first explorer to realize that Antarctica was a continent and not just a large chain of islands, and he discovered the section of the shelf that was to become the Victoria Barrier. Asian nations also took part in Antarctic exploration when Nobu Shirase of Japan mounted his 1911 expedition, while Sir Edgeworth David, a Welsh-Australian, was the first person to successfully reach the summit of Mt. Erebus. Richard Evelyn Byrd is believed to be the first pilot to cross the Antarctic continent, and even well past the era of great polar expeditions, British figures such as Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Mount Everest, made several expeditions to the South Pole.
Nevertheless, the golden age of polar exploration of the furthermost continents did not reach its zenith until the turn of the 20th century, and national rivalries abounded between the major seafaring nations of the world.

In Extinction and the Human Timothy Sweet ponders the realities of animal extinction and endangerment and the often divergent Native American and Euro-American narratives that surround them. He focuses especially on the force of human impact on megafauna—mammoths, whales, and the North American bison—beginning with the moments that these species' extinction or endangerment began to generate significant print archives: transcriptions of traditional Indigenous oral narratives, historical and scientific accounts, and literary narratives by Indigenous American and Euro-American authors.

Sweet investigates culturally distinct ways of understanding the extinction of the mammoths; the impact of the Euro-American whaling industry and the revitalization of Native American whaling traditions; and the bison's near-extermination at the hands of white market hunters and today's Euro-American and Native American efforts on behalf of the animal's preservation. He reflects on humans' relations with animals through models of divine preservation, competitive extermination, evolutionary determination, biophilia, and treaties with animals. Ultimately, he argues, it is the critical assessment of ideas of human exceptionalism that provides a necessary counterpoint both to apologies for human mastery over nature and deep ecology's attempts to erase the human.

Dominance is the desire to establish position.
It is the instinct to lead, command attention, and occupy higher ground within social, professional, and competitive environments.
In this audiobook, Reece Wideman explores what dominance really is, how it shows up in everyday life, and why humans instinctively respond to authority, presence, and hierarchy.
Listeners will gain insight into leadership dynamics, status signaling, and the difference between grounded authority and aggressive compensation — learning how dominance, when mastered, creates order rather than conflict.

In The End of Ambition, Steven A. Cook charts the course of the United States' encounter with the Middle East from the mid-twentieth century through the present day. Looking back, Cook makes a bold claim: the US was--despite setbacks and moral costs--successful. That record of achievement began to unravel in the early 1990s when policymakers embarked upon a set of overly ambitious policies to remake the Middle East. Cook highlights that calls to withdraw from the region are rash given the important interests the US maintains in the region. Yet, he also underscores how those interests are changing and explores alternatives to America's current approach to the Middle East against the backdrop of political uncertainty in the United States and a changing global order.

A clear-headed vision for the United States' role in the Middle East that highlights the changing nature of US national interests and the challenges of grand strategizing at a time of profound change in the international order.
