Sinossi

In "Theodicy," Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz explores the complex relationship between the existence of evil and the benevolence of God, arguing for a rational framework that reconciles these seemingly contradictory concepts. Written in the early 18th century, this philosophical treatise showcases Leibniz's characteristic clarity and systematic reasoning, employing a blend of metaphysics, theology, and logic. He synthesizes rationalist thought with Christian doctrine, ultimately positing that our world, despite its imperfections, is the best of all possible worlds that God could create, thus providing a comprehensive defense of divine justice amidst human suffering. Leibniz, a prominent figure of the Enlightenment and a pioneer in various fields, including mathematics and philosophy, was deeply influenced by the tumultuous events of his time, including wars and plagues, which prompted his reflections on theodicy. His intellectual pursuits were rooted in a quest for harmony and rational understanding, as he sought to bridge gaps between faith and reason. Leibniz's unique background—encompassing scientific inquiry and philosophical discourse—shaped his argument in this seminal work. "Theodicy" remains a crucial text for anyone seeking to understand theodical arguments and the interplay of faith and reason. Readers with an interest in philosophy, theology, or the Enlightenment will find Leibniz's work invaluable, illuminating profound questions about existence and morality while encouraging a contemplative approach to life's inherent challenges.

Recorded on March 30 and 31, 1969 at a New York City sculpture studio, these are the original talks by Ram Dass that became basis for his seminal book, Be Here Now. Over 40 years later, Be Here Now still stands as the highly readable centerpiece of Western articulation of Eastern philosophy and continues to be the instruction manual of choice for generations of spiritual seekers.

Ram Dass talks about how we can be present and utterly accepting of each moment in life as it is in the here and now, and uses stories such as the Sermon on the Mount and the teachings of Ramakrishna to illustrate concepts such as finding the sacred in the “profane”, grasping and why we do it, yin and yang duality and oneness, and unconditional love.

These talks are a primer on the fundamental underpinnings of so many spiritual practices popular today. We are also extremely pleased to have the inspired artwork of Peter Max on this digital download cover.

Following is a transcribed excerpt from one of these seminal teachings: "If I think life is just a game, then I am taking from it the meaning of its acts. I am denigrating the precious nature of the life process. Do you think the man that made the music stand was able to make a more exquisite music stand because he was not attached to making a music stand? Do you think he really got closer to the essence of music standness because he did not remain in subject object relation to the music stand? That’s the issue."

Given how far back the Egyptian civilization goes, it’s no surprise that Egypt is still full of mystery, and the unknown continues to generate conspiracy theories that attempt to fill in the gaps. For example, generations have viewed Egypt’s pyramids and the Great Sphinx as symbols of a lost past, which in turn leads to Egypt’s portrayal as a world full of romance and mystery. The age and structural integrity of these magnificent structures also make them symbols of longevity and power, which is only fitting because those are two purposes the ancient pharaohs who commissioned them intended them to serve.
In fact, while the sphinx was a well-known mythological creature among various ancient civilizations, the Egyptian statue that is now most famously associated with the creature is full of mysteries that have been endlessly debated throughout the centuries and continue to be hotly contested among scholars. The famous “Riddle of the Sphinx”, told by Sophocles in his play Oedipus Rex in the 5th century B.C., characterized the sphinx as a clever and powerful creature, and the mysteries of the Egyptian statue were discussed even among the ancient Romans. Even the source of the damage suffered by the Sphinx has become the stuff of legend, as evidenced by the story of Napoleon’s French soldiers shooting off the Sphinx’s nose.
Of course, the Sphinx is merely one object in Egypt that has been the source of endless theories. The discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb revived the legends of pharaohs’ curses and mummies, and ancient Egyptian art has been analyzed in seemingly every conceivable way possible as people come up with alternate theories for how the Egyptians built their most famous buildings and forged their enduring civilization.

The Einstein Syndrome is a follow-up to Late-Talking Children, which established Thomas Sowell as a leading spokesman on the subject of late-talking children. While many children who talk late suffer from developmental disorders or autism, there is a certain well-defined group who are developmentally normal or even quite bright, yet who may go past their fourth birthday before beginning to talk. These children are often misdiagnosed as autistic or retarded, a mistake that is doubly hard on parents who must first worry about their apparently handicapped children and then see them lumped into special classes and therapy groups where all the other children are clearly very different. Since he first became involved in this issue in the mid-90s, Sowell has joined with Stephen Camarata of Vanderbilt University, who has conducted a much broader, more rigorous study of this phenomenon than the anecdotes reported in Late-Talking Children. Sowell can now identify a particular syndrome, a cluster of common symptoms and family characteristics, that differentiates these late-talking children from others; relate this syndrome to other syndromes; speculate about its causes; and describe how children with this syndrome are likely to develop.
