Sinossi

Nothing more strangely indicates an enormous and silent evil of modern society than the extraordinary use which is made nowadays of the word "orthodox." In former days the heretic was proud of not being a heretic. It was the kingdoms of the world and the police and the judges who were heretics. He was orthodox. He had no pride in having rebelled against them; they had rebelled against him. The armies with their cruel security, the kings with their cold faces, the decorous processes of State, the reasonable processes of law—all these like sheep had gone astray. The man was proud of being orthodox, was proud of being right.

Since its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work “her own darling child” and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, “as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print.” The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austen’s radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England.

Austen at fourteen, writing for her family and sparing no one: a burlesque of the sentimental novel in which heroines faint alternately on a sofa, virtue is proved by fainting, and reason is despised as vulgar. She spelt the title wrong in the manuscript and it has stayed wrong ever since. Read it for the shock of hearing the mature voice already fully armed. Fifty-five plates of landscape and farmyard scenes by painters including John Constable and George Morland set the Regency world Austen was already mocking at fourteen.

Becky Sharp leaves school by throwing the dictionary out of the carriage window and climbs, by charm and calculation, through a society that deserves her. Amelia Sedley is loyal past all sense. Thackeray called it a novel without a hero and meant it: the gaze is colder than Dickens's and considerably more adult. The Gilded Library volume carries full-page plates — ballrooms, the Waterloo encampment, society drawing rooms — and takes its decoration from the domino mask, the fan, the playing cards and the puppet booth of Thackeray's own frontispiece.
