Sinossi

In "Matisse Picasso and Gertrude Stein," Gertrude Stein intricately weaves together the lives and works of two of the foremost figures in modern art, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. The book juxtaposes their artistic philosophies and vibrant personalities, offering a compelling exploration of the avant-garde movement during the early 20th century. Stein's unique literary style—characterized by rhythmic prose and a penchant for repetition—immerse readers in a world where visual art and literature harmoniously intersect, capturing the essence of creativity that defined an era. The text serves not only as a study of artistic genius but also as a snapshot of the tumultuous cultural landscape in which these artists thrived, enriching our understanding of their lasting impact on art history. Gertrude Stein, a key figure in the Parisian artistic community, was deeply embedded in the context of modernism. Her relationships with avant-garde artists and her role as a patron and commentator allowed her to experience first-hand the emotional and intellectual undercurrents that drove Matisse and Picasso. Stein's own revolutionary approach to literature, marked by experimentation and an unorthodox structure, reflects the very essence of the groundbreaking artistry she admired. This book is a must-read for art and literature enthusiasts alike. Stein's insightful analysis and evocative prose not only from an artistic lens but also illuminate the personal dynamics that fueled the creative process of two monumental figures. Readers seeking to deepen their understanding of modernism and its key players will find this work both enlightening and engaging.

From acclaimed literary biographer Claire Tomalin, a complex and fascinating exploration of the early life of the influential writer and public figure H. G. Wells

How did the first forty years of H. G. Wells's life shape the father of science fiction?

From his impoverished childhood in a working-class English family and determination to educate himself at any cost to his complicated marriages, love affair with socialism, and the serious ill health that dominated his twenties and thirties, H. G. Wells's extraordinary early life would set him on a path to become one of the world's most influential writers. The sudden success of The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds transformed his life and catapulted him to international fame; he became the writer who most inspired Orwell and countless others and predicted men walking on the moon seventy years before it happened.

In this remarkable, empathetic biography, Claire Tomalin paints a fascinating portrait of a man like no other, driven by curiosity and desiring reform, a socialist and a futurist whose new and imaginative worlds continue to inspire today.

It's the summer of 1979. A 15-year-old boy listens to WNEW on the radio in his bedroom in Brooklyn. A monotone voice (it's the singer's) announces into dead air in between songs ""The Talking Heads have a new album, it's called Fear of Music"" - and everything spins outward from that one moment. Jonathan Lethem treats Fear of Music (the third album by the Talking Heads, and the first produced by Brian Eno) as a masterpiece - edgy, paranoid, funky, addictive, rhythmic, repetitive, spooky and fun. He scratches obsessively at the album's songs, guitars, rhythms, lyrics, packaging, downtown origins, and legacy, showing how Fear of Music hints at the directions (positive and negative) the band would take in the future. Lethem transports us again to the New York City of another time - tackling one of his great adolescent obsessions and illuminating the ways in which we fall in and out of love with works of art.

Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 - February 3, 1959), known as Buddy Holly, was an American singer, songwriter, and musician who was a central and pioneering figure of mid-1950s rock and roll. He was born to a musical family in Lubbock, Texas, during the Great Depression, and learned to play guitar and sing alongside his two siblings. In 1956 Holly created the band, The Crickets, with drummer Jerry Allison, bassist Joe B. Mauldin, and, from 1956 to 1958, rhythm guitarist Niki Sullivan. On February 3, 1959, Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson were all killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with pilot Roger Peterson. The event became known as "The Day the Music Died" after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his 1971 song "American Pie." The following audio includes several brief interviews Holly made in the late 1950s.
