We rely on your support to help us keep producing beautiful, free, and unrestricted editions of literature for the digital age. Will you support our efforts with a donation ? The Black Moth focuses on Lord Jack Carstares, an 18th-century earl who has retreated from society and become a highwayman after taking the blame for cheating at cards years ago. He meets our heroine, Diana Beauleigh, when he rescues her from an attempted abduction by the Duke of Andover, and the three of them proceed to have grand adventures. Published in 1921, The Black Moth is Georgette Heyer's first novel, and marks her debut as one of the originators of the modern historical romance. Set in the Georgian period, the novel features many of the elements that are characteristic of Heyer's work: action, romance, and aristocratic characters in a historical setting, all focusing on themes of love and honor. Georgette Heyer (died 1974) was a significant literary figure of the 20th century. Their work has endured across generations and continues to be read and studied worldwide. As a work of classic literary fiction, The Black Moth exemplifies the narrative craft and social insight that defined great storytelling of its era. Literary fiction of this period was characterized by careful attention to character psychology, social milieu, and the moral questions that animated public discourse.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (November 30, 1874 – April 24, 1942), published as L. M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables. The book was an immediate success. The title character, orphan Anne Shirley, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following.
Four Winds: Alan Douglas threw down his pen with an impatient exclamation. It was high time his next Sunday's sermon was written, but he could not concentrate his thoughts on his chosen text. For one thing he did not like it and had selected it only because Elder Trewin, in his call of the evening before, had hinted that it was time for a good stiff doctrinal discourse, such as his predecessor in Rexton, the Rev. Jabez Strong, had delighted in.

Virginia in the 1680s: a convict-servant with a gentleman's past, a planter's daughter, and the Tobacco Rebellion — when men went through the fields at night cutting the plants to force the price up. Freeman wrote the definitive stories of New England's stubborn, straitened women; this is her one costume novel, and the Virginia in it is a colony where labour is property.

Lambeth: a hat-maker's workgirl with a beautiful voice, the working-man idealist engaged to her, and the rich young man who comes south of the river to educate the poor and falls in love instead. Gissing's academic career ended at eighteen when he was caught stealing to support a young prostitute he married; he thought this 1887 novel his best, and the tenement streets in it are drawn by someone who had lived in them.
